A noble young man suffered a terrible wound in the Tatar war.
Someone told him, “So-and-so, the merchant, has a healing medicine. If you ask him, he might not withhold it from you.”
This merchant was notorious for his stinginess.
If the sun were on his table instead of bread,
no one in the world would see a single day of light until the Day of Judgment.
The noble young man replied, “If I ask him, he may or may not give it to me (that healing medicine). And if he does give it to me, it may or may not benefit me. But asking him is like deadly poison.
Every time you ask those with base souls for something (and it will certainly be out of their favor, not out of kindness, love, or respect), your body will become burdened, and it will greatly affect your spirit.”
And the wise said, “If you were to buy the water of life (water is essential)…” To survive) But, you sacrifice your dignity for it. A wise person would not trade their dignity for the water of life, for death with honor is better than a life of humiliation.
(If the water of life were offered for sale at the price of human dignity,
a wise person would not accept this deal, for death with dignity is preferable to a life of humiliation.)
Eating colocynth (a plant with unbearably bitter fruit) from the hand of a person of good character is better than eating sweets from the hand of a person of bad character.

أَلمَ بشابٍ كريمٍ جَرحٌ مُرعبٌ في حربِ التتارِ
فقالَ لهُ أَحدُهمُ: لدى فُلانٍ، التاجرُ، دَواء شافٍ، إن طلبتَ منه، ربما لم يبخل به عليكَ
وكان ذلكَ التاجر مَشهوراً بالبخلِ
لو كانت الشَمس بدلاً من خبزهِ على المائدةِ
لما رأى أحدٍ في الدنيا يَوماً مُضيئاً إلى القيامةِ
فقال الشابُ الكريمُ: إن طلبتَ منه، فقد يُعطيني أو لا يعطيني إياه (ذلك الدواء الشافي)، وإن أعطاني إياه، فقد ينفعني أو لا ينفعني، لكن الطلبُ منه كالسُمِ القاتلِ
كُلما طَلبت من أصحاب النفوس الدنيئة، طلباً (بالتأكيد سوف تكون بمنةٍ منهم، وليس فضلاً ولا بحُبٍ وكرامةٍ)
زاد الهم في بدنكَ، وسوف يؤثر كثيراً في روحك
وقالَ الحُكماء: لو أشتريتَ ماءُ الحياةِ (الماء ضروري للبقاء على قيد الحياة) ولكن، تبذل ماء وجهكَ من أجلهِ، لن يُبادل العاقلُ ماء وجههِ مقابل ماء الحياةِ، فالموتُ بِعزةٍ خيرٌ من الحياةِ بذلٍ
(لو عُرض ماءُ الحياة للبيع بثمن كرامةُ الإنسانِ،
ما قبِل العاقل هذه الصفقة، لأن الموت كريمًا أولى من عيشٍ مَهينٍ)
لو أكلتَ الحَنظل (نبات له فاكهة مُرة لاتطاق ابداً) من يدِ حَسنَ الخُلقِ
خَيرٌ من الحلوى مِن يد سيء الخُلق

جوانمردی را در جنگِ تاتار جراحتی هول رسید
کسی گفت: فلان بازرگان نوشدارو دارد، اگر بخواهی، باشد که دریغ ندارد
گویند آن بازرگان به بُخْل معروف بود
گر به جایِ نانْشْ، اندر سفره بودی آفتاب
تا قیامت روزِ روشن کس ندیدی در جهان
جوانمرد گفت: اگر خواهم، دارو دهد یا ندهد، و گر دهد، منفعت کند یا نکند، باری، خواستن از او زهرِ کُشنده است
هر چه از دونان به منّت خواستی
در تن افزودیّ و از جان کاستی
و حکیمان گفتهاند: آبِ حیات اگر فروشند فیالمثل به آبروی، دانا نخرد که مردن به علّت بِهْ از زندگانی به مَذَلّت
اگر حَنْظَل خوری از دستِ خوشخوی
بِهْ از شیرینی از دستِ تُرُشروی
