A pious man was a guest of a king. When they sat down to eat, the pious man ate less than he desired. But when they stood together to pray, he prayed more than usual—to increase their (others’) perception of his piety (to appear more ascetic than normal).
“I fear you will not reach the Ka’aba, O Guest,” the king said, “for the road you are taking leads to Turkestan (present-day Xinjiang, western China).”
When he returned home, he asked for a table laden with food to eat. He had a perceptive son who said, “Father, did you not eat anything in the sultan’s court?” The father replied to his son: “I didn’t eat anything substantial in front of them.” The son immediately retorted: “Then repeat the prayer (make up the missed prayers) too, Father, for you also didn’t pray anything substantial.”
O you who carry your virtues on your palm (O you who display your virtues so clearly and openly)
And hide your flaws (your faults) under your arm (you hide all your faults from others)
What do you want to buy, you arrogant one (what do you want from this? Are you laughing at others?)
On the day of your helplessness, with the coins of deceit? (When you are one day helpless and have nothing but deceit)
Meaning of the story
You cannot gain true respect with a false act
You cannot attain true esteem and righteousness through false actions and hypocrisy. The ascetic in the story did two completely contradictory things:
In front of the sultan:
He ate less than he wanted (to appear ascetic)
He prayed more than usual (to appear pious)
At home (when no one was watching):
He ordered food and ate with relish
(The son implies that his prayers, too, were devoid of spirit and devotion)
The astute son exposed the hypocrisy in just two words: “You have done nothing worthwhile in the eyes of people… nor in the eyes of God.”
Therefore, the profound meaning is this: Hypocrisy (doing good deeds to be seen by others) is unacceptable to God. And pretense (falsely displaying asceticism and piety) nullifies all good deeds. True righteousness is what you do in private, not what you do in front of cameras or before the sultan.
True piety resides within… and hypocrisy, even if it deceives people, is self-deception and an insult to God.
Arabic Translation
حَلَ زاهدٌ ضَيفاً على ملكٍ، فلما جَلسوا على مائدةِ الطعام أكل الزاهد أقلَّ مما تشتهيهِ نفسه، ولما قاموا سوية إلى الصلاة صلَّى الزاهد أكثر مما اعتاد – ليزداد ظَنُّهم (ظن الأخرين) بصلاحهِ (يظهر زهداً أكثر من المعتاد)
أخشى ألا تبلغ الكعبة يا أعرابي
فإن الطريق التي تسلكها، تؤدي الى تركستان (حاليا أقليم شينجيانغ غرب الصين)
فلما رجع إلى منزله طلب مائدة (مليئة بالأكل) ليأكل، وكان له ولدٌ ذكيُّ الفهمِ (ذو/صاحب فراسةٍ)، فقال: يا أبتِ، ألم تأكل في مجلس السلطانِ شيئًا؟ فرد الأب على ابنهِ: ما أكلتُ شيئاً يعتد به أمامهم، فرد الأبن من ساعتهِ: فأعدْ الصلاة (صلي ما صليت سابقا قضاءاً) أيضًا (يا أبتِ)، فلم تصلي شيئًا يُعتدُّ به ايظاً
يا مَنْ حَملتَ مَحاسنك على الكفِّ (يا من أظهرت محاسنك بشكل جلي وواضح)
وخبأ’تَ مَعايبكَ (عيوبك) تحت الإبط (خبأت كل عيوبك عن الأخرين)
ماذا تريد أن تشتري يا مغرور (ماذا تريد من وراء ذلك؟ تضحك على الأخرين ؟)
يوم عجزك بدراهم الغشِّ؟ (عندما تكون يوماً عاجزاً لا تملك شيئا سوى الغش)
لايمكنك الحصول على الاحترام الحقيقي بتصرف مزيف
لا يمكنك أن تنال التقدير الحقيقي والصلاح الحقيقي بالتصرفات المزيفة والرياء، فالزاهد في الحكاية كان يفعل شيئين متناقضين تمامًا
أمام السلطان
يأكل أقل مما يريد (ليبدو زاهدًا)
يصلي أكثر مما يعتاد (ليبدو تقيًّا)
في بيته (حين لا يراه أحد)
يطلب الطعام ليأكل بشهية
(والابن يلمِّح أن صلاته أيضًا كانت بلا روح ولا خشوع)
فالابن الذكي كشف النفاق بكلمتين فقط:«ما فعلتَ شيئًا يُعتدُّ به في نظر الناس… ولا في نظر الله»
إذًا المعنى العميق:الرياء (فعل الخير ليراك الناس) لا يُقبل عند الله
والتصنّع (إظهار الزهد والتقوى كذبًا) يُبطل العمل كله
الصلاح الحقيقي هو ما تفعله وأنت في الخلوة، لا ما تفعله أمام الكاميرات أو أمام السلطان
التقوى الحقيقية في الباطن… والرياء حتى لو خدع الناس، فهو خداع للنفس وإهانة لله.

زاهدی مهمان پادشاهی بود، چون به طعام بنشستند، کمتر از آن خورد که ارادتِ او بود و چون به نماز برخاستند، بیش از آن کرد که عادت او، تا ظنِّ صَلاحیت در حق او زیادت کنند
ترسم نرسی به کعبه، ای اعرابی
کاین ره که تو میروی به ترکستان است
چون به مُقام خویش آمد، سفره خواست تا تَناوُلی کند، پسری صاحبِ فراست داشت، گفت: ای پدر! باری به مجلس سلطان در، طعام نخوردی؟ گفت: در نظر ایشان چیزی نخوردم که به کار آید، گفت: نماز را هم قضا کن که چیزی نکردی که به کار آید
ای هنرها گرفته بر کفِ دست
عیبها بر گرفته زیرِ بغل
تا چه خواهی خریدن ای مغرور
روزِ درماندگی به سیمِ دغل
