A sheikh from the Levant was asked about the true nature of Sufism.
He replied: “In the past, there were people whose outward appearance was scattered but whose hearts were united. Today, there are people whose outward appearance is united but whose hearts are scattered.
If your heart inclines to something and goes in a different direction every hour, then even in solitude you will not find purity or light
and, if you possess status, wealth, crops, and abundant trade, if your heart is truly with God, then you are in true solitude, even if you are among people
Arabic Translation
سُئل شيخٌ من مشايخِ الشامِ عن حقيقة التصوف؟
فقال: كان في السابق قومٌ مُتفرّقي الهيئة مَجموعي القُلوب، واليوم قومٌ مُجموعي الهيئة مُتفرّقي القلوب
إذا كان قلبُك كلَّ ساعةٍ يميلُ إلى شيءٍ ويذهبُ إلى وجهةٍ
ففي الخلوةِ وحدها لن ترى صفاءً ولا نورًا
وإن كنتَ تملك الجاهَ والمالَ والزروعَ والتجارةَ الكثيرةَ
فإذا كان القلبُ مع اللهِ حقًّا، فأنتَ في خلوةٍ حقيقيةٍ وإن كنتَ بين الناس

یکی را از مشایخ شام پرسیدند از حقیقتِ تصوّف، گفت: پیش از این طایفهای در جهان بودند بهصورت پریشان و بهمعنی جمع، اکنون جماعتی هستند بهصورت جمع و بهمعنی پریشان
چو هر ساعت از تو به جایی رود دل
به تنهایی اندر، صفایی نبینی
ورت جاه و مال است و زَرع و تجارت
چو دل با خداى است، خلوتنشینی
