On my journey to the land of Hijaz (the Hajj), I was accompanied by wise young men (kind-hearted), and they walked with me
At times, they would hum (speak softly) in a gentle tone, reciting a verse that resonated with their feelings and circumstances (or discussing the validity of a particular verse). There was a worshipper on the road (a fellow traveler) who disapproved of the dervishes’ condition and denied it, oblivious and ignorant of their pain and longing
When we arrived in the lands of the Banu Hilal, a dark-skinned Arabic boy and start singing, his voice shaking the birds in the sky
I saw the worshipper’s camel dancing with delight (its mood swayed by the boy’s singing), then it threw him to the ground (it threw the old man, the traveler with us), and went on its way
I said to him: “O Sheikh! The singing affected the animal, yet it didn’t affect you?”
“Do you know what that enchanting nightingale (with its sweet song) told me?
What kind of man are you, oblivious to love (divine love), and ignorant of it?”
The camel dances with joy to Arabic poetry, in a state of ecstasy
If you have no taste, then you are inherently crooked, lacking taste altogether
And when the breezes blow across the protected pasture,
the branches of the myrtle sway, not the solid rock
With His remembrance, you see everything you see has a loud voice (the voice of glorification when the name of God is mentioned)
And he who understands this meaning has a heart full of understanding, listening well.
It is not only the nightingale that glorifies God on his rose
Nay, every thorn glorifies Him (glorifies God) with its tongue
Arabic Translation
في رحلتي الى أرضِ الحجازِ (الحَجِ) كان يرافقني شبابٌ حُكماء (أصحاب قلوب طيبة)، وكذلك كانوا يمشون معي
فكَانُوا فِي بَعْضِ الْأَوْقَاتِ يَتَغَنَّوْنَ (يتحدثون بصوتٍ خافت) بنغمةٍ خَفِيفَةٍ، وَيُنْشِدُونَ بَيْتًا مُحَقَّقًا فِي الذَّوْقِ وَالْحَالِ (أو يتناقشوا في التحققِ من بيتٍ معين)، وَكَانَ هُنَاكَ عَابِدٌ فِي الطَّرِيقِ (عابد عابر سبيل معنا) يُنْكِرُ حَالَ الدَّرَاوِيشِ وَيَجْحَدُهُ، وَهُوَ غَافِلٌ جَاهِلٌ بِأَلَمِهِمْ وَشَوْقِهِمْ
ولما وصلنا لديار بني هِلال، خَرجَ صَبيٌ أسمرُ الطلةِ من العربِ وغنّى بصوتٍ هزّ الطيور في السماءِ
رأيت ناقة العابدِ تَرقصُ من الطربِ (أستمال حالها لغناء الصبي)، فألقتهُ أرضًا (ألقت الشيخ عابر السبيل معنا) ومَضت
قلت له: يا شيخ! أثّر الغناءُ في الحيوانِ، ولم يُؤثر فيك؟
هَلْ تَدْرِي مَاذَا قَالَ لِي ذَلِكَ البُلْبُلُ السَّاحر (عَذب التَغريد)؟
أَيُّ إِنْسَانٍ أَنْتَ، وَأَنْتَ غَافِلٌ عَنِ العِشْقِ (العشق الالهي)، وَجَاهِلٌ بِهِ؟
النَّاقَةُ تَرْقُصُ طَرَبًا لِلشِّعْرِ العَرَبِيِّ، وَهْيَ فِي حَالٍ من الوَجْدِ
فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ عِنْدَكَ ذَوْقٌ، فَأَنْتَ بِطَبْعٍ أَعْوَجٍ، لا ذوق لك
وَعِنْدَ هُبُوبِ النَّشِرَاتِ عَلَى الحِمَى
تَمِيلُ أَغْصَانُ البَانِ، لا الحَجَرُ الصُّلْدُ
بِذِكْرِهِ تَرَى كُلَّ مَا تَرَى له صوتٌ عالٍ (صوت التسبيح إذا ذكر اسم الله)
والذي يَفْهَمُ هَذَا المَعْنَى قَلْبٌ عامرٌ يَستمع بشكلٍ جيدٍ
لَيْسَ البُلْبُلُ وَحْدَهُ مَنْ يُسَبِّحُ عَلَى وَرْدِهِ
بل كل شوكةٍ تسبح له (تسبح لله) بلسانها

وقتی در سفر حجاز طایفهای جوانانِ صاحبدل همدمِ من بودند و همقدم
وقتها زمزمهای بکردندی و بیتی محقّقانه بگفتندی و عابدی در سَبیل، منکِر حالِ درویشان بود و بیخبر از دردِ ایشان
تا برسیدیم به خیلِ بنیهلال؛، کودکی سیاه از حَّیِ عرب به در آمد و آوازی بر آورد که مرغ از هوا در آورد
اشتر عابد را دیدم که به رقص اندر آمد و عابد را بینداخت و برفت
گفتم: ای شیخ! در حیوانی اثر کرد و تو را همچنان تفاوت نمیکند
دانی چه گفت مرا آن بلبل سحری؟
تو خود چه آدمیی کز عشق بی خبری
اشتر به شعرِ عرب در حالت است و طرب
گر ذوق نیست تو را، کژ طبع جانوری
وَ عِنْدَ هُبُوبِ النّاشِراتِ عَلَی الْحِمیٰ
تَمیلُ غُصُونُ الْبانِ لا الْحَجَرُ الصَّلْدُ
به ذکرش هر چه بینی در خروش است
دلی داند در این معنی که گوش است
نه بلبل بر گلش تسبیحخوانی است
که هر خاری به تسبیحش زبانیست
