A king was traveling on a ship with a young foreign boy who had never seen the sea before and had never experienced the rocking of a ship. He began to cry and scream, and his body trembled. No matter how much they tried to comfort him gently, he would not calm down, and the king’s peace and comfort were disturbed by him. They could find no solution to his distress.
There was a wise man on the ship, who said to the king, “If you permit me, O King, I will quiet him in my own way.” The king replied, “That would be most kind of you.”
The wise man ordered that the boy be thrown into the sea. He sank several times, then they grabbed him by his hair and pulled him back towards the ship. He clung to the ship’s rudder with his hands, and when he was brought aboard, he sat in a corner and calmed down.
The king was astonished and asked, “What is the wisdom in this?”
The wise man replied, “He had never tasted the bitterness of drowning before, so he did not know the value of safety on the ship. Similarly, a person does not know the value of well-being until misfortune befalls him.”
O you who are satiated with food, you will no longer appreciate eating barley bread.
If you see the beloved as ugly from afar, yet he is dear to me.
For the houris of Paradise, the Al-A’raf is Hell.
And if you ask the inhabitants of Hell, the Al-A’raf is Paradise for them.
There is a difference between one who embraces his beloved
And one who waits for him with eyes fixed on the door.
Arabic Translation
كان ملكٌ راكباً سفينة مع غُلامٍ أعجمي، ولم يكن لهذا الغلام أن رأى البحر من قبل، ولم يجرب شدة السفينة، فبدأ يبكي ويصرخ، و أرتعد جسده، و مهما حاولوا في تهدئته باللطف، لم يهدأ، فتنغصت عيشة وراحة الملك منه، ولم يعرفوا حلاً لحالتهِ، وكان هناك حكيم في السفينة، فقال للملك: إن أذنتَ (ايها الملك)، سوف أسكّته بطريقتي الخاصة، فقال الملك: هذا مُنتهى اللطفَ منكَ
أمر الحكيم بإلقاء الغلام في البحر، فغطَ في البحر عدة مرات، ثم أمسكوا بشعره وسحبوه بالقرب من السفينة، فتشبّث بيديه بدفّة السفينة، ولما صعد، جلس في زاوية وهدأ.
تعجّب الملك وسأل: ما الحكمة في هذا؟
قال الحكيم: لم يكن قد ذاق مرارة الغرق من قبل، فلم يعرف قيمة السلامة في السفينة، وكذلك لا يعرف الإنسان قيمة العافية إلا إذا أصابته مصيبة.
يا مَنْ شبعتَ من الأكل، لن يعجبك تناول خبز الشعير بعدُ
إن كنت ترى المعشوق قبيحاً من بعيد، ولكن محبوباً بالنسبة لي
بالنسبة للحور العين في الجنة، الاعراف جهنم
وإن سألت أهل النار، فالأعراف عندهم هي جنة
فَرقٌ بين من يَحضن حبيبه
وبين من ينتظره بعينين على البابِ
Persian Tale from Saadi Gulistan
پادشاهی با غلامی عَجَمی در کشتی نشست و غلام، دیگر دریا را ندیده بود و محنت کشتی نیازموده. گریه و زاری درنهاد و لرزه بر اندامش اوفتاد. چندان که ملاطفت کردند آرام نمیگرفت و عیشِ مَلِک از او مُنَغَّص بود. چاره ندانستند.
حکیمی در آن کشتی بود، ملک را گفت: اگر فرمان دهی، من او را به طریقی خامُش گردانم. گفت: غایتِ لطف و کرم باشد.
بفرمود تا غلام به دریا انداختند. باری چند غوطه خورد، مویَش گرفتند و پیشِ کشتی آوردند. به دو دست در سُکّانِ کشتی آویخت. چون برآمد به گوشهای بنشست و قرار یافت. ملک را عجب آمد؛ پرسید: در این چه حکمت بود؟
گفت: از اوّل محنتِ غرقه شدن ناچشیده بود و قدرِ سلامتِ کشتی نمیدانست. همچنین قدرِ عافیت کسی داند که به مصیبتی گرفتار آید.
ای سیر تو را نانِ جُوین خوش ننماید
معشوقِ من است آن که به نزدیکِ تو زشت است
حورانِ بهشتی را دوزخ بود اَعراف
از دوزخیان پرس که اَعراف بهشت است
فرق است میانِ آن که یارش در بر
تا آن که دو چشمِ انتظارش بر در
Al-A’raf primarily refers to the barrier separating Paradise and Hell, and the term also refers to a group of people whose good and bad deeds are equal, so they stand on this barrier until God decrees their fate. The word “Al-A’raf” also linguistically refers to anything that is high or elevated, such as a mountaintop or the crest of a rooster.
