In this passage, Khwaja Ubayd Zakani reaches the pinnacle of his satirical exposure of social hypocrisy and sycophancy toward authority. He reveals how the virtue of “forbearance” (hilm) is redefined within this “chosen doctrine”: transforming from a state of inner serenity and rising above petty grievances into the “acceptance of slaps, the yanking of beards, and verbal and physical abuse in the gatherings of the elite.” They regard this “submission and endurance” as the key to livelihood and the sole path to securing positions of power and wealth.
English Translation
Indeed, our associates—the elite—do not entirely discourage this trait of forbearance; for they say:
Although people may take liberties with a person characterized by forbearance and patience—mistaking such traits for incapacity or weakness—this virtue nonetheless holds immense benefits and plays a pivotal role in the well-being of one’s livelihood and worldly success.
The proof of this assertion lies in the fact that—unless a person, during his youth, endures the insults of the rabble and the wayward while responding with forbearance and dignity—he will not, upon reaching adulthood, face slaps or humiliations in the gatherings of the elite and the powerful; nor will they tear his beard, putting their finger in his back (down), cast him into his water trough, or rain down the vilest obscenities upon the honor of his wife and sister.
That sensible man—the one hailed today as the “man of his era/time”—would be unable to secure even a single grain of barley were he unwilling to endure such hardships and indignities; without doing so, he would remain forever a failure and a destitute loser, a target of his enemies’ gloating, never gaining entry into a household nor attaining honor in the presence of any person of stature.
The famous saying, “A deal (a slap) is the key to livelihood” was said in this way. And the meaning of this famous verse
Amidst the struggles of time and its vicissitudes, a man must be like the bottom millstone—enduring the grinding and the weight (or the indignity and abuse) in order to secure a benefit for himself.
…reinforcing this sentiment.
Among the benefits of this [cultivated] forbearance is this: if the wife or followers of a prominent figure were to be accused of wrongdoing, and he lacked the adornment of such forbearance and the grace of dignity, anger would seize his temperament and drive him to madness—for “anger is the devourer of reason.” He deems it permissible to beat and kill his wife and children, and to mutilate his attendants and servants; he destroys his own home with his own hands and drives his family to loathe him; he spends his days and nights in sorrow and gloom, fearing that someone might impugn the honor of his household or his own sense of protective pride. He recites the verse:
If you possess ghayrah (protective zeal), you live with constant worry and affliction;
But if you lack it, you become a base and ignoble wretch.
As for that great and divinely favored soul—whose being is adorned with the virtues of forbearance and dignity—even if the honor of his followers were violated before his very eyes a thousand times, not the slightest trace of distress would touch his noble spirit; thus, he lives out his life in the highest state of well-being and tranquility. He is pleased with his family and followers, and they are secure in his presence.
If anyone leveled an accusation against his honor, he would pay it no heed, instead reciting:
“If a dog barks atop the hay-store roof, do not be troubled.”
Being unconcerned, paying no heed to the noise and words of petty, insignificant people, and maintaining composure in the face of others’ taunts and objections.

A Tale
I heard that a certain prominent man once had a wife who was elderly and unattractive, yet chaste and modest; he divorced her and married a woman of striking beauty who was a harlot. True to her nature, the new wife began offering herself to the public, prompting people to reproach him, saying…
“Did you leave behind a chaste, modest woman to choose an unchaste one?” With great forbearance and dignity, the man replied: “Your limited intellects cannot grasp the secret of this wisdom. Before, I used to eat filth all by myself; now, I eat sweets in the company of a thousand People”
It is said in the proverbs that “the dayyuth (the base, unjealous man) is happy in both worlds.” This has been interpreted and explained as follows:
As long as the dayyuth remains in this world, he lives a carefree and comfortable life, free from the affliction of jealousy or the burden of protective zeal. In the Hereafter, too—given the Prophetic hadith stating that the dayyuth shall not enter Paradise—he is spared, by virtue of this very nature of his, the headache of keeping company with the petty sheikhs and ascetics (who inhabit Paradise) and enduring their grim, scowling faces. For whenever he sees such a sheikh, he might well recite:
“If you hold a station in Paradise,
Then others shall choose Hell, fleeing from you.”
By this logic, the dayyuth is indeed happy in both worlds.
However, a point—or rather, an objection—arises here. If someone were to ask: “If this group—namely, the senior figures and great men who are dayyuths (cuckolds)—finds the company of ‘lesser’ sheikhs in Paradise off-putting, yet Hell contains a thousand judges, deputies, and agents for every single sheikh in Paradise, how is it that they do not grow weary of their company in the Hell?” …the answer is…
In this world, those sheikhs were distinguished by worship and purity—even if, beneath the surface, there was a taint of ostentation and foolish vanity—whereas that oppressed individual never once sat for worship nor prostrated even a single time. Thus, the situation of the sheikhs differed from his own.
As for the judges and their associates, since they were characterized by disobedience, forgery, deceit, obfuscation, consuming illicit wealth, injustice, slander, fault-finding, perjury, greed (an excessive avarice), nullifying the rights of Muslims, covetousness, cunning, sowing discord among people, brazenness, and bribe-taking—and since all these traits were ingrained in him as well—a complete affinity (or congruence) existed between them!
This affinity was the reason for his comfort in the company of judges and their associates; for like gravitates toward like—much like the proverb, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Indeed, as the sages say: “Affinity is the cause of attraction.” Thus, if the Zabaniyah (angels of Hell) were to drag him toward Hell, that great soul would joyfully recite:
“If, tomorrow, they were to usher me into Paradise with the righteous—yet without my Beloved—
Then it is better that they drag me into the Hell with the sinners.”
The poet employs a verse by Saadi Shirazi from the genre of ghazal—a verse that speaks of the True Beloved (the True God) rather than a material beloved.

Indeed, one of the eminent exegetes, in interpreting the noble (Quran) verse—”And there is none of you but shall come to it [Hell]”—stated that all creation shall traverse the Sirat (the bridge over Hell) with the speed of lightning, save for judges and their cohorts; for they shall remain in Hell for all eternity, playing a game of “fiery chess” together.
As recorded in Prophetic traditions and the narrations of the Chosen One: the inhabitants of Hell amuse themselves with the Fire.
For these reasons, they prioritize this particular virtue above all others.
The Underlying Meaning and Satirical Symbolism of This Passage
In this passage, the poet Ubayd Zakani presents a masterful depiction of the indignity to which the elite subject themselves at the gates of sultans.
The Inverted Concept of “Forbearance” (Forbearance as the Acceptance of Humiliation): The poet reveals how the ruling elite transformed the philosophical virtue of “forbearance” into “submissive behavior.” In their view, the “forbearing” man is not one who masters himself in anger; rather, he is one who stoically endures slaps, the yanking of his beard, and mockery of his honor—all to curry favor with kings.
The satirical use of philosophical concepts (specifically the “rational soul”): He employs biting irony when claiming that this capacity to endure humiliation stems from the “forbearance and dignity centered in the rational soul,” thereby illustrating how reason is co-opted to justify the most extreme forms of degradation.
The distortion of proverbs and poetry: Transforming the commercial adage “The deal is the key to livelihood” into “The slap is the key to livelihood,” and twisting a Shahnameh verse regarding the “lower millstone”—shifting its meaning from a call for patience and valor during adversity to an exhortation to accept being ground down and groveling in the dust for the sake of a purse of money. The Dinars
Shattering Moral Concepts (Chivalry as an Affliction): The poet turns moral standards upside down; he portrays chivalry and a jealous regard for honor as a “disease and an ailment” that brings only worry and sorrow to the bearer, while framing insensitivity and a lax attitude toward honor as “dignity and forbearance” that yield prosperity and happiness.
Satirizing Inverted Jurisprudential Interpretation (“The Vile Man/Cuckold/Base Fellow is Blessed in Both Worlds”): His citation of the Prophetic Hadith (“The cuckold shall not enter Paradise”)—coupled with his sarcastic, inverted interpretation—strikes directly at the practice of text distortion by the leaders of his era and their associates. He argues that the cuckold’s exclusion from Paradise is actually a blessing and a boon, as it spares him the company of pretentiously pious sheikhs and grim ascetics with their sour, scowling faces.
Critique of Despotism and Religious Hypocrisy: This dual-layered satire targets not chastity itself, but rather the ruling class and the pretenders who outwardly profess righteousness while secretly engaging in every form of baseness and abandonment of principle.
A Scathing Dissection of Judicial Corruption: The poet directs his sharp criticism at the judicial offices and legal representatives of his time, enumerating their characteristics and criminal behavior (forgery, deceit, bribery, the nullification of rights, etc.) serves as the true criterion for “affinity” with the conduct of corrupt “great men.”
Inverted philosophical application (“nature is the cause of attraction”): The poet exploits a famous philosophical maxim to demonstrate that the gravitation of these “great men” toward the judges in Hell is not a punishment, but rather a “congruence of natures”—for evil souls find comfort in one another’s company, wherever they may be.
The “Fiery Chess” tableau in Hell: The image of judges playing “fiery chess” in the lowest depths of Hell stands as a prime example of dark comedy; it depicts those who once orchestrated worldly schemes and deceit, now seeing their judicial maneuvers transformed into a game played upon a board… (A game of chess made of embers, which they play for all eternity in Hell.).
