One of the former kings neglected the administration of the kingdom, and his army was in dire straits. He faced a powerful enemy, and everyone turned against him.

If they withhold money from the soldier,
He will refuse to draw his sword.

One of those who betrayed (the king) was behaving as a friend (to me), so I rebuked him and said: “You are base, ungrateful, despicable, and a denier of favors. You turn against your former master at the slightest change in circumstances, and you squander the rights of the years of kindness your master bestowed upon you.”

He said: “Perhaps (perhaps you will find an excuse for me out of your generosity) if you forgive me with kindness, for my horse in this situation has no barley, and the piece of cloth I place on the horse’s back, under the saddle, is mortgaged (I mortgaged it for something with a document promising to return it when I am able), and the sultan who is stingy with gold (does not spend generously for his army) on his army cannot be met (does not deserve to be met) with courage (does not deserve for you to sacrifice your life for him with courage).”

Spend generously on your soldiers, so that they may sacrifice themselves for you on the day of battle (put their lives at your service).
If you do not spend what you have for their sake, they will abandon you for another master.

When the young lion is well-fed, he attacks fiercely,
And the one with an empty stomach fleeing (fleeing is easier for him).

Arabic Translation

أحد الملوك السابقين أهمل في إدارة المملكة، وكان جيشه في ضيق شديد، فواجه عدوًّا قويًّا، فانقلب الجميع عليه

إذا بخلوا بالمال عن الجندي
فأنه يأبى أن يمد يده إلى السيفِ

كان أحدهم ممن غدروا (بالملك البخيل) تظاهر بالصداقةِ (يتظاهر بالصداقة لي، تقرب مني كصديقٍ)، فوبّخته وقُلتُ: دنيء، جاحد، وضيع وناكر للجميل، يتحوّل عن سيّده القديم بأدنى تغيّر في الحال، ويُهدر حقوق نعم السنين من قبل سيده عليهِ

قال: ربما (ربما تجد لي، عذراً، كرماً منكَ) إن عفوتَ عنه بالكرمِ، فإن فرسي في هذه الواقعة بلا شعير، وقطعة القماش التي أضعها فوق ظهر الفرس، تحت السرج مَرهونةٌ (رهنتها من أجل شيء ما بوثيقة أتعهد بردها حين ميسرة)، والسلطان الذي يبخل بالذهبِ (لا يبذل الغالي والنفيس من أجل جيشه) على جيشه، لا يمكن أن يُقابل (يستحق أن تُقابلهُ) بالشجاعةِ (لا يستحق أن تفدي روحك له بشجاعةٍ)

أبذل الغالي والنفيس من أجل جنودك الرجالِ، حتى يفديكَ في يوم القتالِ (يضع رأسه في خدمتكَ)
فإن لم تبذل ما لديك بحقهم، فأنهم سيتركونكَ الى غير سيدٍ

اِذا شَبِعَ الْکَمِیُّ (شبل صغير) یَصُولُ بَطشاً
وَ خاوِی الْبَطْنِ یَبْطُشُ بِالفِرارِ (يكون الفرار أسهل له)

Persian Text

یکی از پادشاهانِ پیشین در رعایتِ مملکت سستی کردی و لشکر به سختی داشتی لاجرم دشمنی صعب روی نهاد همه پشت بدادند

چو دارند گنج از سپاهی دریغ

دریغ آیدش دست بردن به تیغ

یکی را از آنان که غَدْر کردند با من دَمِ دوستی بود، ملامت کردم و گفتم: دون است و بی‌سپاس و سِفله و ناحق‌شناس که به اندک تغیّرِ حال از مخدومِ قدیم برگردد و حقوقِ نعمتِ سال‌ها در نوردد

گفت: ار به کرم معذور داری شاید، که اسبم در این واقعه بی‌جو بود و نمد زین به گرو¹، و سلطان که به زر بر سپاهی بخیلی کند، با او به جان جوانمردی نتوان کرد

زر بده مردِ سپاهی را تا سر بنهد

و گرش زر ندهی، سر بنهد در عالم

اِذا شَبِعَ الْکَمِیُّ یَصُولُ بَطشاً

وَ خاوِی الْبَطْنِ یَبْطُشُ بِالفِرارِ

1. «نمد زین به گرو» عبارتی است که در بیت «گلستان» سعدی به کار رفته و در فارسی به معنای «نمد زیر زین را به عنوان گرو (ضمانت) قرار دادن» است
   . «نمد زین» نمدی است که زیر زین اسب می‌اندازند و «گرو» در اینجا به معنای گرو گذاشتن یا وثیقه است ↩︎
