If a wise man argues with ignorant people,
He cannot hope for victory.
And it is no wonder if an ignorant person prevails with his words,
For a stone can break a jewel with its hardness.
It is no surprise if the nightingale falls silent and does not sing,
If a crow shares its cage with its jarring voice.
If the experienced scholar encounters hostility and rejection from the ignorant,
He should not grieve or be broken, nor should he close his door to others.
For if a worthless stone breaks a golden vessel,
It does not increase the value of the stone, nor does the gold diminish in value.
Arabic Translation
إذا نازعَ حكيماً جُهّالاً، فلن يُرجى له النصرُ
ولا عجبَ إن غَلبَ جاهلٌ بحديثهِ
فالحجرُ قد يكسرُ الجوهرَ بقسوته
لا غرابةَ إن خَرِسَ العندليبُ ولم يُغرّدْ
إذا شاركهُ الغرابُ قفصَهُ بصوتٍ مُزعجٍ
إن رأى العالمُ المُتمرسُ جَفاءً ومقاطعةً من الجُهالِ
فلا يحزنْ أو ينكسرْ ولا يغلقْ بابَهُ أمامَ الآخرين
فحجرٌ خسيسٌ إن كسرَ إناءَ الذهبِ
لا يزيدُ من قيمةَ الحجرِ، ولا الذهب ينقصُ بمقدارِ
Persian poem
حکیمی که با جُهّال دراُفتد توقعِ عزّت ندارد وگر جاهلی به زبانآوری بر حکیمی غالب آید عجب نیست که سنگیست که گوهر همیشکند.
نه عجب گر فرو رود نَفَسَش
عندلیبی غُراب هم قفسش
گر هنرمند از اوباش جفایی بیند
تا دلِ خویش نیازارد و در هم نشود
سنگِ بد گوهر اگر کاسه زرّین بشکست
قیمتِ سنگ نیفزاید و زر کم نشود
