Let your heart be forever heavy with sorrow born of love

English Translation

You said, O my Beloved: “Let your heart be forever heavy with sorrow born of love.” In truth, the heart has been so since time immemorial; let it remain so for eternity—what is there to prevent it?

O Rose (my Beloved), do not disturb the beauty of the other flowers—the hyacinth and the lovely ruby-hued rose—with my lamentations; bid the nightingale tear the veil of sorrow and rejoice, while you remain hidden behind the curtain.

For in this valley, my heart is like prey yearning for renewal and freedom; would that the Hunter (my Beloved) returned to set a new trap, that I might fall into his love—and his grasp—forever.

Censors and rivals strive in vain, believing you are near me; they speak words born of mere conjecture and guesswork—for I hope that their words were certainty.

Tonight, the wound in my heart has deepened because of those beautiful lips; O Lord, grant those lips even greater grace and allure than before, that I may be utterly consumed by love.

Ever since your hand wielded the sword of estrangement, the slain have fallen row upon row; may that arm, in its next act of reaping souls, move with greater agility and skill than this.

As for the rival who follows the trail, seeking union through prayer alone—no matter how fervently he supplicates, I say: let his desire never be granted.

Yesterday, when that slender, full-moon-like figure departed, I lost my wounded heart, left to drown in its own blood; and since the religion of love has claimed the heart, let the soul follow it forevermore.

This enamored heart has become a ruin because of you—much like Tabriz was once devastated by an earthquake; let this ruined realm remain thus, forever subject to the seal of your sovereignty.

If those lips—which breathe life into the soul—have plundered the gems of pure hearts from Badakhshan, then let it be so, the beloved’s black tresses—O Azar—plunder the scent of musk from the land of Khata (China), and its fragrance too, forevermore.

The Poem’s Inner Meaning and Sufi Symbolism

This ghazal by the poet Azar Bigdeli serves as a cry of surrender to—and a relishing of—”Gnostic affliction.” The poet views divine love not as worldly comfort, but as a state of pure trial; thus, grief, sorrow, and public exposure before others are not misfortunes, but rather signs of being chosen and accepted by the Beloved.

The Exiled Heart and the Ruin of Tabriz: Likening the heart’s devastation to the ruin of Tabriz (a historical allusion to the city’s catastrophic earthquake and the tragedies of that era) is not an expression of lamentation; rather, it represents a Sufi surrender to the concept of “annihilation in the Truth” (al-fanā’ fī al-Ḥaqq). The ruin of the material structures of the self is a prerequisite for establishing the sovereignty of the Beloved (under the seal of kingship).

The Spiritual Path: Divine love begins with the trial of the self, followed by the submission of faith and spirit to the awe-inspiring majesty of the Beloved, and the unveiling of the spiritual secret between the lover and the Lord in the station of Divine Manifestation.
