Modesty, loyalty, truthfulness, mercy, and compassion – the Abrogated Code

We now open the concluding chapter of this timeless, satirical manuscript; Khwaja Ubayd-i Zakani articulates the lofty tenets of the “abrogated school of thought”—encompassing the virtues of modesty, fidelity, truthfulness, and compassion. He defines these four virtues within this abandoned doctrine as follows: modesty is the soul’s restraint from the unsightly; fidelity is honoring covenants and requiting kindness; truthfulness is sincerity of both heart and tongue; and compassion is showing mercy to the distressed and striving to relieve their suffering.

English Translation

The wise have defined haya’ (modesty or bashfulness) as the soul’s restraint and holding back to avoid reprehensible actions that invite blame and disgrace; indeed, the Noble Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—stated: “Modesty is a part of faith.”

Wafa’ (faithfulness or loyalty) is the commitment to a path of solidarity and the reciprocation of every act of kindness or favor received; as stated in the Revelation: “And whoever fulfills that upon which he has covenanted with Allah—He will give him a great reward.”

Truthfulness (sidq) entails sincerity in one’s inner self regarding one’s brethren and the uprightness of the heart, ensuring that nothing contrary to reality is uttered by the tongue.

Mercy and compassion (rahmah and shafaqah) mean that when a person witnesses someone in an adverse situation—whether facing something unpleasant or suffering harm—they respond with mercy and kindness upon him, and devoted his full effort to removing that harm from him.

The Underlying Meaning and Satirical Symbolism of This Passage

In this passage, the poet Ubayd Zakani completes the masterful construction of the book’s final chapter (The Ethics of the Nobles):

The embodiment of human virtues within the abrogated doctrine: In this concluding section, the poet brings together the four pillars of noble character—modesty, fidelity, truthfulness, and compassion—to emphasize that a just society rests not merely on outward laws, but on the purity of inner intentions, the honoring of covenants, sincere friendship, and compassionate solidarity.

Laying the Groundwork for the Grand Final Trap: This idealized, revered definition of the four virtues serves as the final prelude to the major political and moral shock found in the “Chosen Doctrine” of the seventh chapter. He will reveal how the “nobles” of his era view modesty as weakness and frailty, loyalty as folly, truthfulness as political ignorance, and mercy as an incapacity that undermines the Sultan’s prestige.
