One night in the desert of Mecca

One night in the desert of Mecca, sleeplessness overwhelmed me, and my feet could bear no more movement (walking). So I laid my head down (to sleep) and said to the camel leader: Leave me alone.

How far can the poor man’s feet walk barefoot?

Even the strong camel is weary of enduring this long journey (the hardship of this distance)
Until the fat body becomes emaciated
And the emaciated body dies, from sheer exhaustion and toil.

He said: My brother, the sanctuary (the place of the Kaaba, where there is safety) is before you, and the forbidden (the prohibited area, where there is no safety) is behind you. If you walk (move), you will survive, but if you sleep (in this desert alone, you will be killed), you will perish. The camel leader said:

The poor man may sleep under the poisonous tree (a thorny tree) in the desert
On the night of departure (journey), but he must bid farewell to his life (he will die).

  • Facade Meaning: The physical, perilous journey to Mecca (safety) versus the threat of the desert (death).
  • Inner Meaning: The “Road of God” (Tariqa) requires perseverance. When the Murid (seeker/disciple, represented by Saadi) becomes tired or distracted, the “Camel Leader” (spiritual guide/Sheikh) must urge him forward, emphasizing that stopping means spiritual death, but pushing toward the “Sanctuary” leads to ultimate salvation and realization.

The simple act of the camel leader refusing to let Saadi rest under the “poisonous tree” becomes a metaphor for a spiritual guide refusing to let a disciple succumb to worldly fatigue or distraction, as it would be fatal to their divine journey.
