The son of a pious man inherited a vast fortune from his uncles’ fortune. He began to indulge in debauchery and immorality, making extravagance a habit.
In the end, he committed every sin imaginable and drank every intoxicant.
Once, I advised him (Saadi advised the pious man’s son): “My son, income is like flowing water, and life is like a millstone. This means that extravagant spending is only guaranteed for those with a stable income.
If you don’t have a stable income, spend less
For sailors sing in their songs:
If the sky doesn’t rain on the mountains,
the Tigris River (in Iraq) will become a dry riverbed in a year.”
(Because the Tigris River’s water comes from rain and snow in Turkey and Iran.)
Take heed. (In your actions) and learn good manners in your life, and abandon frivolity and play. For if the blessing ends, you will suffer hardship and regret.
The young man ignored this advice of mine and objected to it, amidst the pleasure of music and drink, saying: “Spoiling immediate comfort with the anxiety of future hardship is contrary to wise judgment.” (*This implies that your advice, O Saadi, does not base on reason and wise judgment.)
Why do those who enjoy pleasure and happiness (those accustomed to and preoccupied with their lives) endure hardship, fearing the onset of hardship and poverty?
So go forth, my friend, and let your radiant heart rejoice
Enjoy today, and fear not the sorrow of tomorrow
For how can I (the young boy speaking of himself), having attained a respected position and having my actions among the people associated with chivalry (the strength and vigor of youth in merriment, enjoying the blessings I possess and sharing them with others), and all of this being known among the common people?
He who is known for generosity and magnanimity
cannot keep his wealth to himself and remain silent.
Once a good name spreads among the people (in the neighborhood),
you cannot shut the door in anyone’s face.
So I saw (Saadi was convinced) that the boy would not accept my advice, and the burning in my heart and the severity of my words had no effect on his mind. (Saadi used the gesture of blowing air to increase the heat to facilitate the forging and crafting of the sword and iron.) So I abandoned his advice (I will not advise him again), and I distanced myself from his company, and I followed the saying of the wise:
Offer what advice you must, and if they do not accept anything from you, do not worry, do not grieve, and do not be sad.
Even though you know that they will not listen to a word you say, say what you have to say, and all that you know of goodness and advice.
For soon you may see the stubborn one
fallen in chains to his feet
And he will clap his hands together, regretting: Alas!
Why did I not heed the advice of the scholars?
After a while, what I had expected (Saadi was speaking about what he had seen) of his misery became apparent. He was sewing the patches together and gathering the morsels piece by piece. His weakness pained me deeply, and I didn’t consider it honorable to exacerbate the boy’s suffering, who had become like a dervish, with blame, adding to his pain. (Saadi used the image of salt being sprinkled on the wound as a metaphor for the intense pain of reproach and blame.)
Then I said to myself (Saadi was speaking to himself):
The companion of depravity at the end of his drunken stupor (the person who has become accustomed to drunkenness and debauchery)
Doesn’t think about the day he will find himself in need.
The tree that bears fruit in the spring
Will inevitably remain leafless in the winter.
Arabic Translation
وَرثَ ابن رَجل تَقي ثَروةٌ لا حدود لها من تَركة (ثروة) أعمامهِ، فبدأ بالفسقِ والفجورِ وأتخذَ من الإسرافِ عادةٍ
بالنهايةِ، لم يَبقَ ذنبٌ الا أرتكبهُ، ولا مُسكرٍ الا و شَربهُ
مَرةً نَصحتهُ (سعدي نصح ابن الشخص التقي): بُني، الدَخل (الثروة) مثل الماء الجاري، والعَيش مثل الطاحونة الدوارة، والمعنى بأن الإنفاق الكَثير مَضمونٌ، فقط لمن لديه دَخلٌ ثابت
إذا لم يكن لديك دَخلٌ ثابتٌ، فأنفق بشكل أقل
فإنَ المَلاحينَ (الذي يقودون القوارب/السُفن) يرددون في أناشيدهم
إذا لم تُمطر السماء على الجبالِ
يُصبح نهر دجلة (في العراق) في سنةٍ عبارة عن مَجرى جافاً
(لأن نهر دجلة مياهه من الامطار والثلوج في تركيا وايران)
أتخذ من العَقلِ (في تصرفاتكَ) و تَعلم الأدب في حياتك، وأترك اللهو واللعب، فإذا أنتهت النعمة، ستعاني المَشقة وتَندم
تَجاهل الفتى هذا النصيحة مني وأعترضَ عليها، وَسط لذة المُوسيقى والشَراب، وقال: إفساد الراحة الفَورية بقلقِ المَشقة المُستقبلية يُخالف الرأي الحكيم (*مما يعني بأن نصيحتك يا سعدي خلاف العقل والرأي الحكيم)
لماذا يَتحمل أهل اللذة والسَعادة (المتعودين واللاهين في حياتهم)
المَشقة، خوفاً من الوقوع المشقةِ والفاقةِ؟
فأمضي يا رفيقاً، افرح قَلبكَ المُنير
وتمتع اليوم، ولا تخف من حزنِ الغدِ
فكيف لي (الفتى يتحدث عن نفسهِ)، وأنا حصلت على مكانةٍ مُشرفةٍ وأرتبطت تصرفاتي مابين القومِ بالفتوةِ (قوة الشباب وجذوتهِ في المرح والتمتع بالانعام التي لدي وصرفها على الأخرين)، وكل هذا أنتشر بين عامةِ القومِ؟
مَن عُرفَ بالسخاءِ والكرمِ
لا يُمكنه أن يضع مالهِ في حضنهِ ويسكت
بُمجرد أن يَنتشر الاسم الطَيب بين الناس (في الحي)
لايمكنكَ اغلاق البابِ في وجه أحدٍ
فرأيت (سعدي أقتنعَ) بأن الفتى لن/لم يَقبل النصيحة مني، وحرقة قلبي وشدة كلماتي لم تؤثر في عقلهِ (أستخدم سعدي اشارة نفخ الهواء لزيادة الحرارة كي يسهل طرق وتصنيع السيف والحديد) فتركتُ نصيحتهِ (لن أنصحه بعد اليومِ)، وأبتعدتُ عن صحبتهِ، وأتبعت قول الحكماء
بَلغ ما يتوجب عليكَ من النصيحةِ، فإن لم يَقبلوا منك شيئا، لاتهتم ولا تحزن ولاتغتم
رغم أنك تَعلم أنهم لن يَسمعوا منكَ قولاً، لكن، قل ما لديكَ
وكل ما تَعرفه من الخيرِ والنصيحةِ
فقريباً قد تَرى العنَيد
ساقطاً في الأغلالِ بكلتا قدميهِ
وسيَضرب يَديه مَعاً، نادماً: واه
لمَ لم أسمع نصيحة العلماءِ؟
بَعد مُدةٍ، ما توقعتهَ (سَعدي يتحدث عن ما رأه) من بؤسهِ قد ظَهر للعيانِ، فقد كان يَخيط الُرقع مَعاً ويَجمع اللقيمات قِطعة قِطعة، وقد أوجع قَلبي، مدى ضعفهِ (ضعف حال الفتى)، ولم أرى من المرؤة مني، أن أخدش جَرح الفتى الذي أصبح حاله كالدرویش، باللومِ، وأزيد من ألمِ جراحهِ (أستخدم سعدي رش الملح على الجرح كاشارة لشدة الالم من العتبِ واللومِ)
بَعد ذلك، فقلتُ في نفسي (سعدي تَحدث لنفسهِ)
رَفيق السفالةِ في نِهايةِ السُكرِ(الشخص الذي أصبح متعودا على السكر والعربدة)
لا يُفكر في اليومِ الذي يُمسي فيه في عوزِ
الشَجرة التي تُعطي ثِمارها في الربيعِ
تَبقى حَتماً بدون أوراق في الشتاءِ

پارسازاده ای را نعمت بیکران از ترکه عمان به دست افتاد، فسق و فجور آغاز کرد و مبذری پیشه گرفت
فیالجمله نماند از سایر معاصی منکری که نکرد و مسکری که نخورد
باری به نصیحتش گفتم: ای فرزند! دخل آب روان است و عیش آسیای گردان یعنی خرج فراوان کردن مسلم کسی را باشد که دخل معین دارد
چو دخلت نیست خرج آهسته تر کن
که میگویند ملاحان سرودی
اگر باران به کوهستان نبارد
به سالی دجله گردد خشک رودی
عقل و ادب پیش گیر و لهو و لعب بگذار که چون نعمت سپری شود سختی بری و پشیمانی خوری
پسر از لذت نای و نوش این سخن در گوش نیاورد و بر قول من اعتراض کرد و گفت: راحت عاجل به تشویش محنت آجل منغص کردن خلاف رای خردمند است
خداوندان کام و نیکبختی
چرا سختی خورند از بیم سختی
برو شادی کن ای یار دل افروز
غم فردا نشاید خورد امروز
فکیف مرا که در صدر مروت نشسته باشم و عقد فتوت بسته و ذکر انعام در افواه عوام افتاده
هر که علم شد به سخا و کرم
بند نشاید که نهد بر درم
نام نکویی چو برون شد به کوی
در نتوانی که ببندی به روی
دیدم که نصیحت نمیپذیرد و دم گرم من در آهن سرد او اثر نمیکند، ترک مناصحت گرفتم و روی از مصاحبت بگردانیدم و قول حکما کار بستم که گفتهاند: بلِّغ ما عَلیکَ فاِن لَم یَقبلوا ما عَلیکَ
گرچه دانی که نشنوند بگوی
هر چه دانی ز نیکخواهی و پند
زود باشد که خیره سر بینی
به دو پای اوفتاده اندر بند
دست بر دست می زند که دریغ
نشنیدم حدیث دانشمند
تا پس از مدتی آنچه اندیشه من بود از نکبت حالش به صورت بدیدم که پاره پاره به هم بر میدوخت و لقمه لقمه همیاندوخت، دلم از ضعف حالش به هم بر آمد و مروّت ندیدم در چنان حالی ریش درویش به ملامت خراشیدن و نمک پاشیدن، پس با دل خود گفتم
حریف سفله در پایان مستی
نیندیشد ز روز تنگدستی
درخت اندر بهاران بر فشاند
زمستان لاجرم بی برگ ماند
