I asked (Saadi asked) a person of great knowledge, about the meaning of this. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Your worst enemy is your own self, which resides within you.”
He replied: “Because every enemy you treat kindly becomes a friend (repel evil with that which is better, for then the one between whom and you there is enmity will become like a close friend), except for the self. The more you appease it, the more it will oppose you.”
A person becomes like an angel when they are content with little (food)
But if they eat like animals (spending their life only eating and not thinking), their value is like that of a stone (even less than that of an animal).
If you fulfill someone’s request, they will become obedient to your command.
This is unlike the self (which incites to evil), which commands you to want more
Arabic Translation
سألتَ (سعدي سألَ) شخصاً عظيماً في المعرفةِ، في معنى هذا الحديث الشريف: أعدى عَدوكَ، نَفسكَ التي بين جنبيكَ
فرد عليَ: بِحكم أن كُل عَدوٍ تُحسن إليهِ، يُصبح صَديقاً (أدفع بالتي هي أحسن، فأن الذي بينك وبينه عداوة كأنه ولي حَميم) إلا النفس، فكلما زدت من مداراتها، زادت من معارضتها لكَ
يُصبح الإنسانُ كأنه صنفٌ من الملائكةِ، عندما يرضى بالقليلِ (الأكل)
وإن أكلَ كالحيواناتِ (أمضى حياته فقط يأكل ولا يفكر)، تكون قيمته كالحجرِ (حتى أقل من قيمة الحيوان)
إذا لبَيتَ طلبَ شَخصٍ، سيُصبح مُطيعاً لأمركَ
خلاف النفسِ (الإمارة بالسوءِ)، التي تأمرك بالمزيد، إذا حصلت على ما تريد

بزرگی را پرسیدم در معنی این حدیث که اَعدی عدوِّک نَفسُک الَّتی بینَ جَنبَیکَ
گفت: به حکم آن که هر آن دشمنی را که با وی احسان کنی دوست گردد مگر نفس را که چندان که مدارا بیش کنی مخالفت زیادت کند
فرشتهخوی شود آدمی به کم خوردن
وگر خورد چو بهایم بیوفتد چو جماد
مراد هر که برآری مطیع امر تو گشت
خلاف نفس که فرمان دهد چو یافت مراد
