I had a companion (Saadi had a companion). We traveled together for years, and our friendship was strong (Saadi describes it as “eating salt,” meaning enduring both good and bad times equally). The bonds of unlimited friendship were firmly established between us. However, recently, due to a trivial matter, he caused me harm, and it became necessary for me to end our friendship. Nevertheless, a connection remained (a thread connecting us; the friendship wasn’t completely severed) on both sides. One day, I overheard a group of dervishes in a gathering reciting two lines of my (Saadi’s) poetry:
My beloved, when she enters with a gentle smile,
It’s as if she’s adding salt to the wounds of the injured (salt helps wounds heal quickly, but the pain is intense).
And if a lock of her hair falls into my hand,
It’s as if the hand of the benefactors has reached out to aid the poor.
The dervishes did not praise the meaning of the poem, but praised their good conduct, and my friend had also excessively praised these words (the verses by Saadi). He expressed regret for the loss of our old friendship and admitted his mistake. I knew he desired friendship again, so I sent him extra verses, and we reconciled.
Wasn’t there a covenant and loyalty between us?
And you turned away, and what a strange thing you did (broke the covenant)!
For once, out of this world, my heart loved you
And I never imagined you would return so quickly
Today, if the secret of your return is to reconcile us,
then that will be all the more acceptable, and you will return as you were (a loyal friend to me).
Arabic Translation
كانَ لي رَفيقٌ (سعدي كان له رفيقٌ) سافرنا معاً سنواتٍ، فكانت صداقتنا قوية (سعدي يعبر عنها بمصطلح أكل الملح، وهو تحمل السيء والحسن على السواء)، وثَبتت بيننا حقوق الصداقةِ غير المحدودةِ، ولكن، حدث أخيراً بسبب مَنفعةٍ تافهة، سببَ أذىً لي، فكان من الواجب أن أنهي الصداقة بيننا، ومع ذلك كان هناك تَعلقِ (شَعرة وصلٍ، لم تنتهي الصداقة بنسبة ١٠٠% بيننا) من الجانبينِ، وسمعتُ يوماً في مجلسٍ يَتحدثون بـبيتين من كلامي (كلام سعدي)
حبيبتي عندما تدخل بابتسامةٍ لطيفةٍ
فكأنما تزيد المَلحَ على جروح الجَرحى (الملح يساعد في التئام الجروح بسرعة، لكن يكون الألم شديد)
فأن كانت قد سَقطت خِصلة شَعرها في يدي
كانما أمتدت يد المُحسنين لإعانة الفقراءِ
طائفة الدراويش لم يثنوا على لُطف هذا الكلامِ، ولكن أثنوا على حسن سيرتهم، وصديقي أيضاً كان قد أثنى بشكل مبالغ فيه على هذا الكلام (الأبيات الخاصة بسعدي)، وعلى فقدانِ الصداقةِ القديمة أبدى تأسفاً، وأعترف بخطئهِ، وعلمت أن من جانبه توجد رغبة في الصداقة مرة اخرى؛ فأرسلت هذه الأبيات له، وتصالحنا
ألم يكن بيننا عهدٌ و وفاءُ؟
فجفوتَ، وبِدعة (كسرت العهد) ما فعلتَ
لمرةٌ واحدةٌ من دون هذا العالم، القلبُ أحبكَ
ولم يكن في حسباني بأنك ستعود بهذه السرعة
اليوم، إن كان سر عودتكَ من أجل الصلح بيننا
فسيكون ذلك أكثر قبولاً، وسوف تعود كما كنتَ (صديقا وفيا لي)

رفیقی داشتم که سالها با هم سفر کرده بودیم و نمک خورده و بی کران حقوقِ صحبت ثابت شده، آخر به سببِ نفعی اندک، آزارِ خاطرِ من روا داشت و دوستی سپری شد و با این همه از هر دو طرف دلبستگی بود که شنیدم روزی دو بیت از سخنان من در مجمعی همیگفتند
نگارِ من چو در آید به خندهٔ نمکین
نمک زیاده کند بر جراحتِ ریشان
چه بودی ار سرِ زلفش به دستم افتادی
چو آستینِ کریمان به دستِ درویشان
طایفهٔ درویشان بر لطفِ این سخن نه، که بر حسنِ سیرتِ خویش آفرین بردند و او هم در این جمله مبالغه کرده بود و بر فوتِ صحبتِ قدیم تأسّف خورده و به خطایِ خویش اعتراف نموده، معلوم کردم که از طرفِ او هم رغبتی هست؛ این بیتها فرستادم و صلح کردیم
نه ما را در میان عهد و وفا بود؟
جفا کردیّ و بدعهدی نمودی
به یک بار از جهان دل در تو بستم
ندانستم که برگردی به زودی
هنوزت گر سرِ صلح است باز آی
کز آن مقبولتر باشی که بودی
