Sa’adi, beheld a corpulent fool (or a fat simpleton) clad in an exquisite, costly robe, riding a purebred Arabian horse, and wearing an Egyptian straw hat upon his head.
Then, one of the onlookers remarked: “O Sa’adi, how do you perceive this richly embroidered silk garment being worn by this ignorant animal?” (He meant: A man devoid of intellect is likened to an animal, which possesses no reason; in all cases, he is a son of Adam, not an actual animal, yet the comparison highlights his lack of wisdom.)
Sa’adi replied:
He is a donkey who, among mankind, Resembles the calf [of Samiri]; A body that bellows, loud and unkind.A single beautiful creation (a creature with a fair countenance) is superior to a thousand robes of silk.
One cannot say that this creature resembles a human (an Adamite),
save for his clothes, the turban (in Sa’di’s time), and his external appearance
Ponder deeply upon all that he owns, and all the means of life he possesses
You shall find nothing acquired through lawful means, except, perhaps, his very blood
Arabic Translation
رأيتُ (سعدى رأى) أحمقاً سَميناً، يَرتدي خِلعة ثَمينة، وراكباً حِصاناً عَربياً أصيلاً، وقُبعة من قصبٍ مصري على رأسهِ
فقالَ أحدهم: يا سعدي!، كيف ترى هذا الحرير المُزخرف يلبسهُ هذا الحيوان الجاهلِ (يعني: إنسان بلا عقلٍ، لذلك يتم مساواتهِ بالحيواناتِ، التي لا عقل لها، وليس صفة حيوانية لهذا الانسان، في كل الاحوال هو من بني أدم وليس حيواناً)؟
قلت
قَدْ شٰابَهَ بِالْوَرَیٰ حِمارٌ
عِجْلاً جَسَداً لَهُ خُوارٌ
خِلقة (مخلوقٍ له وَجه جميلٌ) جَميلةٌ واحدةٌ أفضل من ألف خِلعة من حريرٍ
لا يمكن القول إن هذا الحيوان يشبه الإنسان (أدمي)
إلا من خلال الملابس، العمامة (في وقت سعدي) والمظهر الخارجي
دقق جيداً في كلِ ما يملك وما له من أسباب الحياة
لن تَجد شيئاً حَلالاً، ما عدا دمهِ

ابلهی را دیدم سَمین، خِلعتی ثَمین در بر و مَرْکَبی تازی در زیر و قَصَبی مصری بر سر
کسی گفت: سعدی! چگونه همیبینی این دیبای مُعْلَمْ بر این حیوانِ لایَعْلَمْ؟
گفتم
قَدْ شٰابَهَ بِالْوَرَیٰ حِمارٌ
عِجْلاً جَسَداً لَهُ خُوارٌ
یک خلقتِ زیبا به از هزار خلعتِ دیبا
به آدمی نتوان گفت مانَد این حیوان
مگر دُراعه و دستار و نقشِ بیرونش
بگرد در همه اسبابِ مِلک و هستیِ او
که هیچ چیز نبینی حلال جز خونَش
