A king’s son inherited a vast treasure from his father, and he opened the hand of generosity and bestowed gifts with lavishness, showering boundless blessings upon the army and the people.
The fragrance of the oud (fragrant wood) never ceases to emanate from its place
Put it in the fire, and it will emit a scent like musk
Greatness must be demonstrated through giving
A seed will not sprout unless it is sown.
One of the courtiers, lacking in wisdom, began to advise him, saying:
“The previous kings accumulated this wealth through effort and saved it for a purpose. So cease this behavior, for events are unfolding and enemies are watching; we should not be caught unprepared when the need arises.”
If you distribute the treasure to the public,
when this reaches every village chief, it will anger them
Why not take a continuous amount of silver from each of them,
so that you will have a treasure whenever you need it?
The prince was displeased with this speech, and he rebuked the man, saying: God Almighty made me the ruler of this kingdom to eat and to give, not a watchful guardian.
Qarun perished, and he had treasures that would fill forty houses
As for Anushirwan, he did not perish, because he left behind a good legacy.
Arabic Translation
ورث ابنُ ملكٍ كنزًا وفيرًا من أبيه، فَفتح يد الكرم وأعطى عطاء السخاءِ، وأمطر النعمة بلا حدود على الجيش والرعية
لا ينقطع إصدار العطر من العودِ (عود طيب الرائحة) من مكانهِ
ِضعه في النارِ ليُصدِرَ رائحة كالمسك
ِيَجب أن تُظهر العَظمةُ بالبذل
فالحَبة لا تنبت إلا إذا بُذرت
بدأ أحد الجلساء الذين يفتقرون إلى التدبير بنصحهِ قائلاً
«إن الملوك السابقين جمعوا هذه النعمة بجهدٍ، وادّخروها لغرض ما، فكُفَّ عن هذا التصرف، فالأحداث قادمة والأعداء ِيراقبون؛ لا ينبغي أن نُفاجأ عند الحاجة»
إذا وزّعت كنزًا على العامة
فعندما يصل ذلك إلى كل رئيس قرية يُغضبه
ِلماذا لا تأخذ من كل واحد منهم قدرا مستمراً من الفضة
فيكون لك كنز في كل وقت تحتاجه؟
استاء الأمير من هذا الكلام، فوبّخ الرجل وقال: جَعلني الله تعالى مالكًا لهذه المملكة لآكلَ وأعطي، لا حارسًا مُراقباً
هلكَ قارون وكان له من الكنوز ما يملأ أربعون بيتًا
أما أنوشيروان، فلم يمت، لأنه ترك أرثاً حسنًا

ملکزادهای گنج فراوان از پدر میراث یافت، دستِ کَرَم برگشاد و دادِ سخاوت بداد و نعمتِ بیدریغ بر سپاه و رعیّت بریخت
نیاساید مَشام از طبلهٔ عود
بر آتش نِه که چون عنبر ببوید
بزرگی بایدت بخشندگی کن
که دانه تا نیفشانی نروید
یکی از جُلَسایِ بیتدبیر نصیحتش آغاز کرد که «ملوکِ پیشین مر این نعمت را به سعی اندوختهاند و برای مصلحتی نهاده. دست از این حرکت کوتاه کن که واقعهها در پیش است و دشمنان از پس؛ نباید که وقت حاجت فرومانی.»
اگر گنجی کنی بر عامیان بخش
رسد هر کدخدایی را برنجی
چرا نستانی از هر یک جوی سیم
که گرد آید تو را هر وقت گنجی؟
ملک روی از این سخن به هم آورد و مر او را زجر فرمود و گفت: مرا خداوند، تَعالیٰ مالکِ این مملکت گردانیده است تا بخورم و ببخشم نه پاسبان که نگاه دارم
قارون هلاک شد که چهل خانه گنج داشت
نوشینروان نمرد که نامِ نکو گذاشت
