A questioner asked the man who had lost his son:
How, O radiant jewel, O great sage,
did you smell (hear of his presence in Egypt) the scent of Joseph (so far from you)?
And why did you not smell (not see what happened to him) when he was inside a well in your land of Canaan (so close to you)?
He replied: Our state is like the lightning of this world,
Sometimes it appears with full force, and other times it disappears completely
Sometimes we sit atop Mount Tarm,
and other times we cannot see even the trace of our footsteps (although the trace is very clear)
If the dervish (the ascetic religious man) were to remain in one state,
his status would rise to the highest heavens (If you were to remain in the state in which you have described yourselves, the angels would greet you and You walked on water
Arabic Translation
سأل سائلٌ لذلكَ (الشخص) الذي فَقد وَلده
كيف ايها الجوهر المتلاليء يا كبير الحكماء
من ديار مصر شممت (سمعت بوجوده في مصر) رائحة يوسف (بعيد جداً عنكَ)
لماذا لم تشم رائحته (لم ترى ماذا حدث له) وهو في داخل بئرٍ في بلادك كنعان (قريبا جداً عليك)
فقال: حالنا كبرقٍ هذا العالم
فتارة يظهر بكل قوة، وتارة أخرى يختفي كُلياً
فنحن تارةً نجلس على أعلى جبل طارم
وتارةً أخرى، لانستطيع رؤية شيء من أثر أقدامنا (على الرغم من أن الاثر واضح جداً)
ولو ثَبت الدرویش (رجل الدين الزاهد) على حالٍ واحدةٍ
لأرتفع شأنه في السموات العليا (لوْ تَدومونَ عَلَی الْحالَةِ الَّتی وَصَفْتُمْ اَنْفُسَكُمْ بِها لَصافَحَتْكُمُ الْمَلائِكَةُ وَ مَشَیْتُمْ عَلَی الْماءِ)

یکی پرسید از آن گمکردهفرزند
که ای روشنگُهر پیرِ خردمند
ز مصرش بویِ پیراهن شنیدی
چرا در چاهِ کَنْعانش ندیدی؟
بگفت: احوالِ ما برقِ جهان است
دمی پیدا و دیگر دم نهان است
گهی بر طارَمِ اعلیٰ نشینیم
گهی بر پشتِ پایِ خود نبینیم
اگر درویش در حالی بماندی
سرِ و دست از دو عالم برفشاندی
