A merchant once suffered the loss of a thousand dinars. He turned to his son and gave him a firm command: “You must not speak of this loss to a single soul.”
The son replied: “O father, your word is law; I shall remain silent. Yet, I pray you tell me: what is the wisdom in keeping this misfortune hidden?”
The father sighed and answered: “So that the calamity does not strike us twice: once in the vanishing of our wealth, and a second time in the malice of our neighbors’ joy.”
Never reveal your sorrows to those who harbor ill will, For while they may utter “God help us,” Their hearts are dancing with delight.
Arabic Translation
تاجرٌ خَسرَ ألفُ دينارٍ، قالَ لابنهِ: لا ينبغي لك أن تتحدث عن هذا (تتحدث عما حدث من خسارةٍ) مع أحدٍ، فردَ الابن: يا أبي، أمركَ مُطاعٌ (هو الحق)، لن أتحدث بما حدث، ولكن، يا أبي، أريدك (أريد أنا) أن تُطلعني على فائدة إخفاء هذا
قالَ الأبُ: حَتى لا تُصبح المُصيبةُ مضاعفة، فواحدة بنقصانِ المالِ والأخرى بشماتة الجيرانِ
لا تتحدث بحزنكَ مع الأعداء
فإنهم يقولون لا حول (لاحول ولا قوة الا بالله عما حدث لك)، ولكن هُم فرحون بداخل أنفسهم

بازرگانی را هزار دینار خسارت افتاد. پسر را گفت: نباید که این سخن با کسی در میان نهی. گفت: ای پدر! فرمان تو راست، نگویم، ولکن خواهم مرا بر فایدهٔ این مطلع گردانی که: مصلحت در نهان داشتن چیست؟ گفت: تا مصیبت دو نشود؛ یکی نقصانِ مایه و دیگر شماتتِ همسایه.
مگوی اندُهِ خویش با دشمنان
که لاحَوْل گویند شادیکنان
