Though the sultan’s robe is precious (the gift from the sultan), the humble garment of a man is more honorable, and though the feast of the great is delicious, the crumbs in one’s own pocket are sweeter.
Vinegar and vegetables grown with one’s own labor
are better than bread and meat offered by the village chief (regional leader, elder, sultan) with condescension.
Arabic Translation
مع أن رداء السلطان ثمين (الهدية من السلطان)، إلا أن ثوب المرء المتواضع أشرف
ومع أن وليمة العُظماء شهية، إلا أن فتات ما في جيب المرء ألذ
الخل، و الخضراوات التي تأتي بعملِ المَرءِ بنفسهِ
أفضل من الخُبز واللحم الذي يقدمه شيخ القرية (زعيم منطقة، الكبير، السلطان) بمنةٍ

خلعت سلطان اگر چه عزیز است، جامهٔ خُلقانِ خود به عزتتر، و خوانِ بزرگان اگر چه لذیذ است، خردهٔ انبانِ خود به لذتتر
سرکه از دسترنج خویش و تره
بهتر از نان دهخدا و بره
