The importance of defeating an enemy

He who sees his enemy and does not defeat him has become himself his own enemy.

(In addition to the visible enemy, the person himself becomes his own enemy; he will aid the enemy in his own downfall.)

If the stone is in your hand and the snake’s head is within your reach, then hesitation is an unforgivable mistake.

The deeper meaning

Here, Saadi depicts a dramatic scene: the stone is in your hand and the snake’s head is beneath the stone (it seeks to destroy you). Hesitation here is no wisdom, but folly that leads to destruction.
