One of the ministers came to Dhu al-Nun al-Misri, asking him for his assistance (help with something, or to fulfill a task or need).
He said: “I am busy day and night serving the Sultan, for I hope for his favor and fear his punishment.” Dhu al-Nun wept and said:
“If I worshipped God Almighty as you worship the Sultan, I would be among the righteous.
Were it not for hope and fear, and the striving between ease and hardship,
the place of the dervish (the ascetic/pious person who fears only God) would be high in the heavens.
And if you feared God as you fear the king,
you would be a king in Paradise.”
Arabic Translation
جاء أحد الوزراء إلى ذي النون المصري يطلب منه العون (مساعدة في أمر أو قضاء حاجة)
فقال: أنا مشغول ليل نهار بخدمة السلطان، أرجو فضله وأخاف عقابه”. فبكى ذي النون وقال
لو أني عبدت الله تعالى كما تعبد السلطان لكنت من الصالحين
لولا الرجاء والخوف، والسعي بين اليسر والعسر، لكان منزل الدرويش (الزاهد/المتدين الذي لا يخشى إلا الله) في عليين
ولو خشيت الله كما تخشى الملك
لكنت ملكًا في الجنة

یکی از وزرا پیش ذوالنّون مصری رفت و همّت خواست؛ که روز و شب به خدمتِ سلطان مشغولم و به خیرش امیدوار و از عقوبتش ترسان، ذوالنّون بگریست و گفت: اگر من خدای را، عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ، چنین پرستیدمی که تو سلطان را، از جملهٔ صِدّیقان بودمى
گر نه اومید و بیمِ راحت و رنج
پایِ درویش بر فلک بودی
ور وزیر از خدا بترسیدی
هم چنان کز مَلِک، مَلَک بودی
