The Scholar among the Ignorants

Musk is defined by its fragrance, not by the praise of its seller

The scholar is like a seller of perfumes (or any merchant sells goods in his chamber); silent, displaying its treasures (goods). The ignorant one is like a war drum; loud, yet empty within.

The scholar among the ignorant
Does not need to swear an oath for them to believe his words.

He is like the sighted among the blind
Or like a Quran in the house of atheists.

The deeper meaning

Musk reveals itself by its fragrance, not by the words of its seller. The scholar is silent, yet he silently displays his skills. The ignorant one is like a war drum; loud, yet hollow.

The Quran contains a vast amount of religious knowledge, but it is of no use to the atheist who does not believe its words. As for the sincere scholar, certain of his truthfulness, he never needs to swear an oath for the ignorant to believe him. He is sighted, while they are, in reality, far removed from understanding the truth, which they cannot see because their eyes and hearts are completely blind.

Arabic Translation

المِسكُ ما فاحَ رِيحُه، لا ما مَدحَهُ عطارُه

العالِمُ كصندوقِ العطارِ؛ صامتٌ يُعرضُ جَواهرَه، والجاهلُ كطبلِ الحربِ؛ صاخبٌ وفارغُ في داخلهِ

العالِمُ بين الجهالِ
لايحتاج الى الحلفِ (القَسم) ليصدقوا كلامه

فهو كالبصيرِ بين العميان
أو كمصحفٍ في بيتِ ملحدين

المعنى العميق

المِسك يعرّف نفسه برائحته لا بكلام بائعه، العالِم صامت لكنه يعرض مهاراته بصمت، بينما الجاهل كطبل الحرب؛ عالِ الصوت لكنه أجوف، المصحف فيه كم هائل من المعرفة الدينية، لكن بدون فائدة للملحد الذي لا يؤمن بكلماتهِ، بالنسبة للعالم الصادق المتأكد من صدقه، لا يحتاج أبدا الى القسم، لكي يؤمنوا به الجهلة، فهو بصيرٌ وهم في الحقيقةِ، بعيدين كل البعد عن فهم الحقيقة التي لا يستطيعون رؤيتها، لأن أبصارهم وقلوبهم عميت بالكامل

مشک آن است که ببوید نه آن که عطار بگوید

دانا چو طبلهٔ عطار است، خاموش و هنرنمای
و نادان خود طبل غازی، بلندآواز و میان‌تهی

عالم اندر میان جاهل را
مثلی گفته‌اند صدیقان

شاهدی در میان کوران است
مصحفی در سرای زندیقان
