If it weren’t for the severity of hunger, no bird would fall into the hunter’s trap, or more precisely, the hunter wouldn’t set a trap.
The wise rarely eat.
The devout have their stomachs half full.
The ascetics eat only enough to keep them alive.
The young eat until their plate is taken from them.
The elderly don’t refrain from eating until they can no longer continue (due to old age).
But those who feign asceticism eat until they are torn apart. Their breaths are gone, leaving no strength in their stomachs, and they leave not a morsel for others on the table.
“The one enslaved by the appetite of the stomach tastes no sleep for two nights:
one night he complains of the heaviness of gluttony (as if there were a stone in his stomach), and the other night he spends in distress and anguish (from the loneliness of the soul and the emptiness of the heart, and his sorrow that he may not obtain the satiety he hopes for the next day)”
Arabic Translation
لو لَم يَكن الأمر مُتعلقاً بشدة الجوع، ما وَقع طائرٌ في فخِ الصياد، أو بعبارة أكثر دقةٍ، ما وضَع الصَيادُ فَخاً للإصطيادِ
فالحُكماء نادراً ما يأكلون
العابدون ِمعدتهم نصف مُمتلئة
الزُهاد يأكلون على قدرِ ما يُبقيهم أحياء
الشُبان يأكلوا لغاية ما يتم أخذ صحن الأكل منهم، من على المائدةِ
كبار السن، لا يمتنعوا عن الأكل لغاية عدم القدرةِ على المواصلةِ (بسبب كبر العمر)
أما المُتظاهرين بالزهدِ، فيأكلوا حتى تتقطع أنفاسهم ولا يبقى في المعدةِ من قُدرة، ولا يبقوا للأخرين من لقمةٍ
إنّ أسيرَ شَهوةِ البطنِ لا يذوقُ النومَ ليلتين: ليلةً يشكو فيها ثِقلَ التُخمةِ (كأنّ في جوفِه حجراً)، وليلةً يبيتُ فيها في ضيقٍ وغُصّةٍ (من وحشةِ الروحِ وفراغِ القلب، وحزنه بأنه قد لايحصل على الشبع الذي يرجوه في اليوم التالي)

گر جور شکم نیستی، هیچ مرغ در دام صیاد نیوفتادی، بلکه صیاد خود دام ننهادی
حکیمان دیر دیر خورند و عابدان نیم سیر و زاهدان سد رمق و جوانان تا طبق برگیرند و پیران تا عرق بکنند، اما قلندران چندان که در معده جای نفس نماند و بر سفره روزی کس
اسیرِ بندِ شکم را دو شب نگیرد خواب
شبی ز معدهٔ سنگی شبی ز دلتنگی
