The Skull Speaks

I heard that once in the city of Hilla (now in Babylon Governorate, Iraq), a skull spoke to a worshiper.

“I had the honor of leadership, wearing the crown of greatness, fortune favored me, and victory was my ally”

I conquered the land of Iraq with the strength of my arms, then I became ambitious, hoping to annex the city of Kerman (Kerman in Persia during the time of Saadi, present-day Iran, to conquer it as I conquered Iraq).

Suddenly, things reached a point where worms devoured me (meaning this time, luck was not on my side, and I was buried in the earth. Certainly, the worms completely consumed the flesh, leaving only the bone—the skull here).

So awaken from your slumber of ignorance and listen attentively, with all your senses, to the truth.

Perhaps the advice of the dead (the skull that spoke to the worshiper) will reach your ears.”

Arabic Translation

سَمعتُ أنه ذات مرة في مدينة الحِلة (في محافظة بابل الأن في العراق)
تحدثت جُمجمةٌ مع عابدٍ

بأنه كان لي شرف القيادة
حيث كان على رأسي تاج العَظمة

وفقني الحظ وساعدني فكان النصر حليفي
ففتحت أرض العراق بقوة سواعدي

فطمعتُ، في أن أضم مدينة كرمان (كرمان في بلاد فارس في زمن سعدي، ايران الحالية، أفتحها، مثلما فَتحت العراق)
وفجأةً وصل الأمر بي الى أن أكلتني الديدان (يعني هذه المرة لم يحالفني الحظ ودفنت في التراب، وبالتأكيد الديدان أكلت اللحم بشكل كامل وبقي فقط العظم، الجمجمة هنا)

فأستيقظ من غَفلة الجَهل وأنصت بتمعن، بكل جوارحك، إلى الحقيقة
فلعل نَصيحة الموتى (الجمجمة التي تحدثت للعابد) تصل إلى مسامعك

شنیدم که یک بار در حله‌ای

سخن گفت با عابدی کله‌ای

که من فر فرماندهی داشتم

به سر بر کلاه مهی داشتم

سپهرم مدد کرد و نصرت وفاق

گرفتم به بازوی دولت عراق

طمع کرده بودم که کرمان خورم

که ناگه بخوردند کرمان سرم

بکن پنبهٔ غفلت از گوش هوش

که از مردگان پندت آید به گوش
