They questioned Hasan Maymandi, the Grand Vizier (Advisor) of Sultan Mahmud Ghazni: “The Sultan possesses many pages (servants) of radiant beauty, each a marvel of the age. How is it that he feels no such inclination or affection for any of them as he does for Ayaz, who possesses no such extraordinary charms?”
He replied: “Whosoever findeth a dwelling in the heart, appeareth beautiful to the eye.”
(**The eye of satisfaction is dim to every flaw, but the eye of anger brings all evils to light.)
He whom the King deigns to call his own,
though his deeds be foul, they are as virtues shown.
But he whom the Monarch casts from his grace,
Shall find no kindness in any courtier’s face.
If you gaze with the eye of disdain and spite,
even Joseph the Fair would seem a wretched sight.
Yet look with the eye of devotion at a fiend,
and a cherub he’ll seem, by the Creator refined.
**In Persian Sufi tradition, Ayaz is often seen as a symbol of the Perfect Soul. He wasn’t the most beautiful, but he was the most loyal. There is a famous legend that he kept his old, ragged shepherd’s clothes in a locked room. Every day, he would go inside and look at them to remind himself: “Yesterday you were a shepherd, today you are a favorite of the King. Do not become arrogant.”
This is why the Sultan loved him—not for his face, but for his Mirror-like Heart that reflected only the Sultan’s will.
Arabic Translation
قالوا لحسن الميمندي (مُستشار السلطان محمود الغزنوي): «إن السلطان مَحمود الغَزنوي لديه عدة عبيد ذوي جمالٍ فائقٍ، كلُ واحدٍ مِنهم عَجيبة من العجائبِ في العالمِ، فكيف وصل به الأمر أن لا يميل لأحدٍ منهم، ولا مَحبة تجاه أي منهم، كما يحدث مع عبدهِ (أياز)، و الذي لا يملك ما للأخرين من جمالٍ؟»، فقال: «كُلُ مَن أستقرَ حُبهُ في القلبِ، يَظَهرُ حَسناً في العينِ»
(بمعنى أن العَين لن ترى العُيوب، وان كانت واضحة على المَحبوبِ)
كلُ من يريده السلطان مقرباً له
ولو كانت كل أفعالهِ سيئة، تصبح كلها حَسنة
و الذي يَطرده المَلك
لن يتلطف أحد معه من بيت السلطانِ
وأي أحدٍ نَظرت اليه بعين الرفضِ وعدم القبول
حتى وإن كان جمالهِ بجمالِ النبي يوسف، سوف يكون سيئاً
و إن نظرت بعين الإخلاص الى شيطانٍ
سوف يكون مَلاكاً، من أفضل ملائكة الخالقِ

حسن میْمندی را گفتند: «سلطان محمود چندین بندهٔ صاحبجمال دارد که هر یکی بدیعِ جهانیاند. چگونه افتاده است که با هیچ یک از ایشان میل و محبتی ندارد، چنان که با اَیاز که حسنی زیادتی ندارد؟» گفت: «هر چه به دل فرو آید، در دیده نکو نماید.»
هر که سلطان مریدِ او باشد
گر همه بد کند، نکو باشد
و آن که را پادشه بیندازد
کَسش از خیل خانه ننوازد
کسی به دیدهٔ انکار اگر نگاه کند
نشانِ صورتِ یوسف دهد به ناخوبی
و گر به چشمِ ارادت نگه کنی در دیو
فرشتهایت نماید به چشم کَرّوبی
