The Tragedy of the Envious

The envious person withholds God’s blessings from others and harbors enmity towards innocent people.

I saw a person of little importance, a dullard,
backbiting about a man of high standing.

So I said to him: Sir, if you are unlucky, what is the fault of those who are fortunate (those who have good fortune and abundant sustenance in this world)?

So do not, O son of Adam, invoke calamity upon the envious one,
for that wretched soul is already in perpetual affliction (it is enough misery for him that he is envious)

So what good will it do you to have you as his enemy,
when his enemy dwells within him (he himself is his own enemy)?
