There were two brothers, one who served the sultan, and the other who earned his living through honest labor.
One day, the wealthy brother (who had gained power and prestige because of his service to the sultan) said to his brother (the hardworking one who earned his living),
“Why don’t you serve the sultan as I do, and be relieved of the hardship of work?”
The self-respecting brother (the dervish/one who earns his living by the sweat of his brow) replied: And you, why don’t you work (as I do), and free yourself from the humiliation of servitude? For the wise have said:
It is better to feed yourself (by the sweat of your brow) and then sit (to rest) than to wield a gilded sword in the service of others.
A hand that works with the heat of the fire to make bread to feed you is better than a hand that places itself in the service of a prince.
(The hand is always placed on the chest when a prince gives an order, meaning, “Your command is obeyed.”)
This precious life should be spent
so that it may feed you in the summer and protect you from the cold of winter.
O hungry stomach, be content with little. (Find satisfaction in the little you have earned with your own hands, “Be content with what you have made with your own hands, even if it is little.”)
So that your back may not bend twice in service (serving others and serving yourself, so that your back may not bend). (serving the Sultan often out of fear)
Arabic Translation
كان هناك أخوين، أحدهما يَخدم السلطان، والآخر يأكل خبزه بقوّة ذراعهٍ
ذات يومٍ، قال الشخص المتمكن (صاحب مال وجاه بسبب عملهِ في خدمةِ السلطانِ) لـ لأخيه (الشخص المتعفف الذي يأكل بكدِ وتعب يدهِ)،
«لماذا لا تخدم (السلطان/كما انا أفعل)، فتستريح من مشقّة العمل؟»
فَردَ الاخ المتعفف (الدرويش/الذي يأكل من كد يدهِ): وأنت، لماذا لا تَعمل (كما اعمل أنا)، فتتحرّر من مَذلّة الخدمةِ؟، حيث قال الحُكماء
تطعم نفسك (من كد يدكَ) وتجلس (لترتاح بعد ذلك)، خَيرٌ من وضع سيفٍ مُذَهب في خدمة الأخرين
يَدٌ تعمل مع حرارة النار لكي تعمل خُبزاً يُطعمك
خير من يدِ تضع يدها في خدمة الأمير
(دائما يتم وضع اليد على الصدر عندما يطلب الأمير أمرا، مفاده، أمركَ مُطاع)
العُمر الثمين هذا يجب أن تقضيه
من أجل أن يُطعمك في الصيف، ويَحميك (يعينكَ) من برد الشتاء
أيتها البطن الجائعة أكتفي بالقليلِ (اصنع لنفسك رضا من القليل الذي حصلتَه بيدك، (أقتنع بالذي صنعته بيدك حتى لو كان قليل)
حتى لا ينحني الظهر مَرتين في الخدمةِ (خدمة الأخرين وخدمة النفس، حتى لاتنحني ظهرا كثيرا في خدمة السلطان خوفاً)

دو برادر یکی خدمت سلطان کردی و دیگر به زورِ بازو نان خوردی
باری، این توانگر گفت درویش را که: چرا خدمت نکنی تا از مشقّتِ کار کردن برهی؟
گفت: تو چرا کار نکنی تا از مَذَلَّتِ خدمت رهایی یابی؟
که خردمندان گفتهاند: نانِ خود خوردن و نشستن به که کمرشمشیرِ زرّین به خدمت بستن
به دست آهک تفته کردن خمیر
به از دست بر سینه پیشِ امیر
عمرِ گرانمایه در این صرف شد
تا چه خورم صَیْف و چه پوشم شِتا
ای شکم خیره به تائی بساز
تا نکنی پشت به خدمت دو تا
