- On Sincerity and Essence
Obedience is not valid with a body devoid of heart (soul), just as a shell without a kernel is not a commodity to be bought.
The deeper meaning: Worship without the presence of heart is merely physical activity, and a body without a soul has no value in the scales of truth; just as a merchant tries to sell empty shells—of course, no one buys them. So how can you sell a commodity as worthless as worship…to God?
- On Eloquence and Integrity
Not everyone who is eloquent in debate is necessarily upright and truthful in dealings.
The deeper meaning: There is a vast difference between eloquence and integrity. Eloquence is not proof of good character.
- On the Deception of Appearances
“How many a graceful figure hides beneath clothes, only to be revealed, when the veil is lifted, as nothing more than a withered old woman!”
The deeper meaning: Outward appearances, however handsome or elegant, may conceal a completely different reality. Do not let your sight blind your insight (knowing the true nature of things, not just their outward appearance).
- On the Value of Scarcity
“If every night were like the Night of Fate (Laylat al-Qadr), the Night of Fate would lose its status and value”
And if all stones were rubies, then the ruby (the ruby of Badakhshan) and the stone would be equal in value.”
The deeper meaning: Value lies in scarcity. Distinction stems from its not always being available. If everything became precious, nothing would truly be precious anymore.
Saadi used (perhaps referring to Badakhshan in Afghanistan) rubies, which are still extracted in limited quantities. (Because of its precious value)
If acts of worship were numerous, anyone could perform them, mere physical movements (worthless in reality, like a stone), but if worship were pure (like a ruby), its value would be far greater.
Arabic Translation
١. في الإخلاص والجوهر
إنّ الطاعةَ لا تَستقيمُ ببدنٍ خاوٍ من القلبِ (بلا روح)، كما أنَّ القشرَ الذي لا لُبَّ فيه لا يُمثّلُ بضاعةً تشترى
المعنى العميق: العبادة بلا حضورِ قلب هي مجرد حركات، والجسد بلا روح لا قيمة له في ميزان الحقيقة؛ تماماً كتاجرٍ يحاول البيع قشورٍ فارغة، بالطبع، لا أحد يشتريها، فكيف اذا كنت تبيع بضاعة لا قيمة لها كالعبادة …لله؟
٢. في الفصاحة والاستقامة
ليس كل من كانَ بليغاً في الجدالِ، كانَ بالضرورةِ مُستقيماً صَدوقاً في المعاملاتِ
المعنى العميق: هناك فرقٌ شاسع بين مهارة اللسان ونزاهة اليد، فبراعة الكلام ليست دليلاً على حُسنِ الخلقِ
٣. في خداع المظاهر
"كم من قوامٍ رشيٍق يَستترُ تحتَ الثيابِ، فإذا ما أنكشفَ الغطاءُ، تبيّنَ أنه ليس إلا عجوزاً فانيةالمعنى العميق: المَظهر الخارجي، مهما كان وسِيماً أو أنيقاً، قد يُخفي وراءه حقيقةً مغايرة تماماً، فلا تجعل بَصركَ يَحجبُ بَصيرتك (معرفة حقيقة الأمور، وليس ظاهرها)
٤. في قيمة الندرة
لو غَدت كلُّ الليالي مِثلَ ليلةِ القدرِ، لَفقدت ليلةُ القدرِ مَقامَها وقدرها
ولو كانت كلُّ الأحجارِ ياقوتاً، لاستوى في القيمةِ الياقوتُ (ياقوت بدخشان) والحجرُ
المعنى العميق: القيمة تكمنُ في الندرة، التميّزُ ينبع من كونه غير مُتاحٍ دائماً، فإذا أصبحَ كل شيءٍ ثميناً، لم يعد هناك شيءٌ ثمينٌ في الواقع
سعدي أستخدم (لعل بدخشان في أفغانستان، الياقوت، لحد الأن يستخرج بكميات معينة، لقيمتهِ الثمينة)
ولو كانت العبادات في الكثرةِ، لأستطاع أي انسان ان يفعل ذلك، مجرد حركات جسدية (لاقيمة لها في الواقع كالحجر)، ولكن لو كانت العبادة خالصة (كالياقوت) سوف تكون قيمتها أعلى بكثير

از تن بیدل طاعت نیاید و پوست بیمغز را بضاعت نشاید
نه هر که در مجادله چُست، در معامله دُرُست
بس قامتِ خوش که زیرِ چادَر باشد
چون باز کنی مادر مادر باشد
اگر شبها همه قدر بودی، شب قدر بیقدر بودی
گر سنگ همه لعل بدخشان بودی
پس قیمت لعل و سنگ یکسان بودی
