A dervish (a pious man) needed something, something he desperately needed, so he stole a rug from a friend’s house.
The ruler ordered that his hand be cut off (the thief, male or female, should have their hands cut off…).
The owner of the rug asked for intercession (from the ruler, so that the thief would be pardoned), saying: “I gave him the rug as his rightful possession, and I forgave him.” (Theft is forbidden, but it becomes permissible after the victim forgives him.)
The ruler replied: “I will not refrain from carrying out the prescribed punishment because of your forgiveness (your intercession).” The owner of the rug said: “You are right, but one who steals from the endowment should not have his hand cut off. The poor own nothing, and all that belongs to the dervishes (pious men who own nothing) is for the needy (like these dervishes who own nothing).”
The ruler then relented and began to rebuke him (the thief), saying: “Has the whole world become too small for you?” You couldn’t find anyone else to steal from except the house of a friend like this?
The dervish replied: My Great Ruler, haven’t you heard those who said: “Leave nothing from the house of friends, steal it all, but break down the door of your enemies if you wish to steal”?
If you find yourself in distress, do not succumb to helplessness. Peel the skin off your enemies, and leave your friends what is most precious to them (meaning, take everything from your enemy by force, you could take everything from your friends, even the most precious thing).
Arabic Translation
أحتاج دَرویش (رجل دينٍ مُتعففٍ) شيئا، كان له فيه ضرورة مُعينة، فَسرق بساط من بيتِ صديقٍ
فأمر الحاكم بقطع يده (*السارق والسارقة فأقطعوا ايديهما …)
فطلب صاحب البساط الشفاعة (من الملك، كي يعفوا عن السارق)، وقال: أعطيته البساط حلالاً له، وسامحته (*السرقة حرام، فأصبحت حلال بعد مسامحة المَسروق منه)
فرد الحاكم: لا أتركُ إقامة الحَدّ الشرعي، بسبب مسامحتك له (شفاعتهِ)، فقال صاحب البساط: صَدقت، ولكن مَن سَرقَ مِن مالِ الوقفِ، لا يجب قَطعُ يدهِ، والفَقيرُ لا يملكُ شيئًا، وكل ما للدراويش (رجال متعففين لايملكوا شيئا) والوقفٌ للمحتاجينِ (أمثال هؤلاء الدراويش الذين لا يملكوا شيئا)
فكفَّ الحاكمُ عنه وبدأ يُوبخه بالقول: هل ضاقت بك الدنيا كلها، حتى لم تجد مَن تَسرقُ منهُ، إلا من بيت مثل هذا الصديق؟
قال الدرویش: يا مولاي، أما سمعت الذين قالوا: لاتدع شيء من بيت الأصدقاء، أسرقه كله، ولكن أكسر باب الأعداء إذا أردت السرقة
إذا وقعت في ضيق فلا تستسلم للعجز

درویشی را ضَرورتی پیش آمد، گلیمی از خانهٔ یاری بدزدید
حاکم فرمود که دستش بدر کنند
صاحبِ گلیم شَفاعت کرد که: من او را بِحِل کردم
گفتا: به شفاعتِ تو حدّ شَرعْ فرو نگذارم
گفت: آنچه فرمودی، راست گفتی، ولیکن هر که از مالِ وقف چیزی بدزدد، قطعش لازم نیاید، وَ الْفقیرُ لایَمْلِکُ. هر چه درویشان راست؛ وقفِ محتاجان است
حاکم دست از او بداشت و ملامت کردن گرفت که:جهان بر تو تنگ آمده بود که دزدی نکردی الّا از خانهٔ چنین یاری!؟
گفت: ای خداوند! نشنیدهای که گویند: خانهٔ دوستان بروب و درِ دشمنان مکوب
چون به سختی در بمانی تن به عجز اندر مده
دشمنان را پوست بر کن، دوستان را پوستین
