One year, a dispute arose among pilgrims on a journey. The one who called for/witnessed this (Saadi, the narrator of the story and what happened) was also traveling with them. But instead of the pilgrimage making us better, we set that aside and began to insult, curse, and quarrel, disregarding justice and fairness.
I heard a rider in a howdah (a litter placed on a camel’s back) say to his companion: “How strange! In chess, if a pawn advances on the board and reaches the end, it becomes a queen, meaning it gains more power than before. But these pilgrims, having traveled on foot (a great hardship), crossed a desert for the sake of the pilgrimage, and they have become worse than before!”
Convey this message from me (Saadi) to that pilgrim who harms people, and harms them in the worst way:
You are not a pilgrim, but the pilgrimage is for the camel,
for it is Poor, it eats thorns, carries loads for others, and harms no one.
Arabic Translation
في أحدى السنواتِ، حدثَ نِزاعٌ بين حُجاج سائرين، والداعي/الشاهد (سعدي، الراوي للحكاية وما حدث) كان معهم في ذلك السفر و سائراً معهم أيضاً، ولكن بدلاً من أن يجعلنا مسير الحجِ أفضل، تركنا ذلك جانباً، وبدأ بعضنا البعض بالسبابِ والشتم والتنازع، وضربنا العدالة والانصاف بعرض الحائط
فسمعت رَاكباً في الهودجِ (على ظهر الجمل يوضع الهودج) يقولُ لرفيقهِ: يا للعجب! في لعبة الشطرنجِ، إذا تقدم البَيدق على رُقعة الشطرنج وتمكن من الوصول إلى النهاية، فإنه يُصبح (ملكة)، أي يصبح أفضل من ذي قبل؛ لكن هؤلاء الحُجاج، سَيراً على الأقدام (عناء شديد)، عَبروا صحراء من أجل الحَج، وأصبحوا أسوأ من ذي قبل!
أنقل كلاماً عني لذلك الحاج الذي يُؤذي الخلقَ
ويؤذيهم شر أذيةٍ
أنتَ لستَ بحاجٍ، ولكن الحَج للجملِ، لأنه
مَسكينٌ، يأكلُ الشوكَ، ويَحمل الأحمال للأخرين ولايؤذي أحد

سالی نزاعی در پیادگان حجیج افتاده بود و داعی در آن سفر هم پیاده، انصاف در سر و روی هم فتادیم و داد فسوق و جدال بدادیم
کجاوهنشینی را شنیدم که با عدیل خود میگفت: یاللعجب! پیادهٔ عاج چو عرصه شطرنج به سر میبرد فرزین میشود، یعنی به از آن میگردد که بود و پیادگان حاج بادیه به سر بردند و بتر شدند
از من بگوی حاجی مردمگزای را
کاو پوستین خلق به آزار میدرد
حاجی تو نیستی شتر است از برای آنک
بیچاره خار میخورد و بار میبرد
