A year of drought descended upon Alexandria, so severe that even the dervishes lost their patience. The gates of heaven were closed to the earth (meaning: the rain), and the cries (shouts, weeping for God’s aid) of humanity rose higher to the sky.
There was no predator, no bird, no fish, no ant
whose cries of anguish did not reach the sky.
And the strange thing (due to the severity of the affliction) was that the smoke in people’s hearts (due to the intensity of their sorrow, it’s a metaphor not real smoke of course) did not condense to form clouds, nor did their tears (due to their abundance) fall like rain.
In such a year, there was a cowardly person. It is impolite to speak of this person’s character (i.e., it is not polite to speak of his attributes), and it is not appropriate, not only in front of friends, but also in the presence of dignitaries. Moreover, it would be inappropriate, indeed… neglecting to mention this person altogether, because some might attribute it to the narrator’s ignorance, I will describe him briefly in the following two lines, for a little speaks volumes (that is, the sample represents the rest of the merchandise), and a handful (of a load on a donkey’s back) is a sample of the entire load.
If the Tatar army kills that coward, no person from Tatar will be killed in retaliation (meaning he is not considered as a man)
How long will that coward remain like the bridge of Baghdad, where water flows beneath it, and men walk upon its surface?
(it’s the lowest level of description for this person, even the meaning contain vulgar meaning, so we opt not to write the real meaning)
Such a person, whose praise you have heard, amassed a great fortune that year. He spent his silver and gold on the needy and provided meals for travelers.
A group of dervishes, on the verge of starvation and at their wit’s end, were inclined to accept his generosity. They consulted me (they consulted Sa’di) about it, but I forbade them from accepting his offer. I told them:
“A lion does not eat half of what a dog eats, even though it might starve to death in its den
Let your body fall into the clutches of hunger and utter helplessness, but never extend your hand to a vile and lowly creature
And even if he is as rich in money and possessions as Faridun, it is impolite to value a worthless person like him
To adorn a worthless person with fine silk and precious fabric is like hanging lapis lazuli and gold on a silent wall.” (The wall has no value whatsoever).
Arabic Translation
حَلّ عامٌ من الجفافِ في الإسكندريةِ حتى أن الدراويشَ فقدوا صَبرهمُ، وأُغلقت أبوابُ السماءِ عن الأرضِ (المقصود: المَطر)، وأرتفعت صيحات (صرخات، بكاء لطلب الغوث من ألله) البشر إلى عنان السماءِ
لم يكن هناك حيوانٌ مُفترسٌ، ولا طائرٌ، ولا سمكةٌ، ولا نملةٌ
الا ووصل بكاؤها من شدةِ البلاءِ إلى السماءِ
والعجب (من شدة البلاء) أن دُخان قلوب الناس (من شدة الحزن) لم يَتكثف
ليُشكّل غِيومًا، ولم تَهطل دَموعهم (من كثرتها) كالمطر
بالطبع لايوجد دخان حقيقي بسبب شدة الحزن والفاقة، لكن هو وصف لشدة ما مروا به من قحطٍ
في مثلِ هذا العامِ، كان هناكَ شَخص جَبانٌ، حيث إن ترك الحديث عن وصف هذا الشخص من الأدب للمتحدثِ (أي ليس من الأدب التحدث عن أوصافهِ) وليس من اللائق، ليس امام الاصدقاء فحسب، ولكن في ُحضرة العُظماءِ، ومن جهة أخرى، سيكون من غير اللائق، بل ومن الإهمالِ، عدم ذكر هذا الشخص بشكل عام، لأن بعض الناس سينسبون ذلك إلى جَهل الراوي، لذا سأصفهُ بإيجازٍ في البيتين التاليين، لأن القليل يَدلُ على الكثير (أي ان النَموذج دالٌ على باقي البضاعةِ)، والقَبضة (من حِملٍ على ظهر حمارٍ ) هي عينة من الحمولة بشكل كامل
إذا قَتل جَيش التترِ ذلك الجبان
فلا يُقتل بالمقابل أي تَتريٌ ردًا على ذلك
إلى متى سيبقى (ذلك الشخص الجبان) كجسر بغداد
حيث الماء يتدفق تحتهِ، والرِجالُ تمشي على ظهره؟
مثل هذا الرجل، الذي سَمعتَ جزءًا من مدحهِ، أمتلكَ في ذلك العامِ ثَروة طائلة، وأنفق الفضةَ والذهبَ على المُحتاجين، وأقامَ موائد للمسافرين
كانت هناك جَماعةٌ من الدراويشِ، الذين كانوا على وشك الموت جَوعًا، ووصلوا الى حدٍ عدم قدرتهم على تحمل المَزيد، يَميلونَ إلى قُبولِ عطاءهِ، وأستشاروني (أستشاروا سَعدي) في الأمر، لكنني رَفضتُ أن يقبلوا دعوة ذلك الشخص، وقلت لهم
الأسدُ لا يأكل نِصف ما أكله كَلبٌ
مع أنه قد يَموت جُوعًا في مَسكنهِ (عَرينه)
دَع جَسدكَ يَسقطُ في براثنِ الجوعِ والعجزِ التامِ
ولكن لا تمدَ يدكَ أبدًا نحو مَخلوقٍ حقيرٍ و وضيعٍ
وإن كان غنيًا بالمالِ والمُمتلكاتِ كفريدون
فإنه من قِلة الأدبِ أن يُعتد بشخصٍ عديم القيمة مِثله
تَعَلَّيقُ الحريرُ الأنيقُ والنسيجُ الثمينُ على الأشخاص عديمي الاهلية
كتعليق حجر اللازوردُ والذهبُ على جدارٍ صامت (لاقيمة للجدار ابدا)

خشکسالی در اسکندریّه عنانِ طاقتِ درویش از دست رفته بود، درهایِ آسمان بر زمین بسته و فریادِ اهلِ زمین به آسمان پیوسته
نماند جانور از وحش و طَیْر و ماهی و مور
که بر فلک نشد از بیمرادی افغانش
عجب که دودِ دلِ خَلق جمع مینشود
که ابر گردد و سیلابِ دیده بارانش
در چنین سال، مُخَنَّثی، دور از دوستان، که سخن در وصفِ او ترکِ ادب است، خاصّه در حضرتِ بزرگان و به طریقِ اِهمال از آن درگذشتن هم نشاید که طایفهای بر عجزِ گوینده حمل کنند، بر این دو بیت اقتصار کنیم که اندک، دلیلِ بسیاری باشد و مشتی نمودارِ خرواری
گر تَتَر بُکشَد این مخنّث را
تتری را دگر نباید کُشت
چند باشد چو جِسرِ بغدادش
آب در زیر و آدمی در پشت
چنین شخصی -که یک طرف از نَعْتِ او شنیدی- در این سال نعمتی بیکران داشت، تنگدستان را سیم و زر دادی و مسافران را سفره نهادی، گروهی درویشان از جورِ فاقه به طاقت رسیده بودند، آهنگِ دعوتِ او کردند و مشاورت به من آوردند، سر از موافقت باز زدم و گفتم
نخورَد شیر، نیمخوردهٔ سگ
ور بمیرد به سختی اندر غار
تن به بیچارگی و گُرْسنگی
بِنِه و دستْ پیشِ سِفله مدار
گر فریدون شود به نعمت و مُلک
بیهنر را به هیچکس مشمار
پرنیان و نَسیج بر نااهل
لاجورد و طلاست بر دیوار
