| They asked Hatim al-Tai (a renowned Arab man known for his generosity): “Have you ever seen or heard of anyone greater than you in your efforts to honor people? (You possess an unparalleled zeal for helping others; have you ever seen or heard of anyone greater than you in this regard?)” He replied: “Yes, one day I slaughtered forty camels to honor Arab princes. When I had the opportunity to go out for some errand in a corner of the desert, I saw a man gathering thorns. He had amassed a pile of thorns, so I asked him why he wasn’t a guest of Hatim al-Tai, since many people frequented his generous table.” He answered: “He who eats his bread through his own toil and hardship does not need the favor of Hatim al-Tai.” “At that moment, I realized (Hatim al-Tai realized this, not Saadi, the narrator of the story) that his zeal and courage were greater than mine.” |
| Arabic Translation قالوا لحاتم الطائي (رَجلٌ عَربيٌ مَعروف بالكرمِ): هل رأيت أو سمعتَ بمن هو أعظم منك في السعي لإكرام الناس (تَملك أنتَ هِمةً كبيرةً لانظير لها لمساعدة الناس، فهل سمعت أو رأيت من هو أعظم منك في ذلك؟) أجاب: نعم، في أحدِ الأيامِ ذَبحتُ أربعين جَملاً لإكرام أُمراءٌ من العَربِ، وحينما سنحت لي فرصة الخروج في حاجةِ لي في رُكنٍ من أركانِ الصحراءِ، رأيتُ جَامعًا للشوكِ هناك، وقد جَمع كُومة (من الشوكِ)، فسألته لماذا لم يكن في ضيافةِ حاتم الطائي، إذ إن كَثيرًا من الناسِ كانوا يترددون على مائدتهِ المَمدودة فأجاب من يَأكل خُبزه بكدهِ وتعبهِ لا يحتاج مِنةَ حاتم الطائي حينها أدركتَ (حاتم الطائي أدرك وليس سعدي الراوي للحكاية) بأن هِمتهَ وشجاعتهِ أعظم مني» |
| Persian text حاتمِ طایی را گفتند: از تو بزرگهمّتتر در جهان دیدهای یا شنیدهای؟ گفت: بلی! روزی چهل شتر قربان کرده بودم اُمرایِ عرب را، پس به گوشهٔ صحرایی به حاجتی برون رفته بودم، خارکنی را دیدم پشته فراهم آورده، گفتمش: به مهمانیِ حاتم چرا نَرَوی که خَلقی بر سِماطِ او گرد آمدهاند؟ گفت هرکه نان از عملِ خویش خورَد منّتِ حاتمِ طایی نبَرَد من او را به همّت و جوانمردی از خود برتر دیدم |
