It is said that the governor of the city of Damghan maimed a man with the blows of his mace, so much so that his screaming and wailing became so loud that it sounded like the sound of a drum.
When night fell upon, the man overcome by insomnia and did not taste sleep, due to excessive confusion and pain. A man of righteousness and piety passed by him and saw him in that state of misery and said to him:
If you had raised your complaint and your heartache to the one who has power (God Almighty) in the middle of the night, your face would not have been spilled because of your crime in broad daylight.
The one who carries the brokenness of his soul and the pain of his conscience to the Creator’s doorstep in the stillness of the nights will not taste the bitterness of shame on the Day of the Greatest Exposition (the Day of Resurrection).
As long as you now have within yourself the inclination to return and reconcile with God Almighty, then what is the reason for fear and awe? The Most Gracious, Glory be to Him, does not close His doors in the face of those who apologize
So seek from God, the Creator and Judge, at night, repentance and forgiveness for the shortcomings you committed during the day of your disobedience.
Indeed, it is truly amazing that the Most Gracious God, who created you out of pure nothingness, does not treat you with His providence and take you by the hand if you find yourself stuck in behavior, ignorance, or heedlessness.
If you acknowledge your servitude to God alone, then raise your hand for forgiveness to ask for your need from the Creator, and if you are burdened with shame, so let the tears of remorse flow from the eyes of anguish.
No one has ever knocked on the door of this Beloved (God) offering a sincere apology without the flood of God’s acceptance of repentance washing away every trace of sin that had clung to their soul.
God Almighty does not waste a person’s dignity or disgrace him, as long as that servant has flowed abundant water from his eyes in his solitude, out of grief for having neglected so much in his worship and not following the path of God Almighty’s truth.
Contextual and cognitive margins
The symbolism of the scepter (chogan): In mystical literature, the scepter and the ball are a symbol of the slave’s submission to the will of fate and destiny, and Saadi here inverts the sensual meaning of punishment. The beating that the man received in “Damghan” is a “whip of warning” to wake him up from the day’s slumber and turn to his Lord at night.
Face (Abru): A strongly central concept in Persian culture; He links “eye water” (tears) with saving “face money” (dignity), and repentance, according to Saadi, is a smart barter: giving “eye water” in secret to buy “face money” in public.
The magic of the nights (Shabzandehdari): Behaviorists focus on the fact that the night is the time of “connection” and the time of “existential washing,” and soliloquy in magic eliminates the costs and scandals that a person has incurred by being preoccupied with creation during the day.
Creation from nothingness (az nist hast): Sufi doctrinal reasoning; The One who cared for you before you were anything mentioned, will not abandon you while you are His broken and repentant servant.
A torrent of remorse: a powerful metaphor that means that true remorse must be as strong as a “torrent” to uproot the roots of guilt from the heart.
This wisdom from Saadi Al-Shirazi in his book Bostan means that the strong bulwark of a servant’s dignity and protecting his face from scandal on the Day of Judgment lies in shedding tears of repentance in the middle of the night. It has importance in spiritual and moral education because it instills in the soul “the hope of sinners” and confirms that the door of the Holy One is open to those who feel pain. Regret before it is too late, confirming that whoever humiliates himself by apologizing in the hands of his Creator at the time of dawn, God will honor him and preserve his cover among creatures at the gathering of the Resurrection.
