Like a stranger, I (Saadi) arrived in Abyssinia, my heart free from the sorrows of time, my soul reveling in the bliss of a comfortable life.
Then, on my way, I saw a raised platform upon which sat a group of wretched people, their feet shackled with iron chains.
Terror seized me, and in the blink of an eye, I prepared to leave. I fled through the vast deserts, like a bird that has just escaped the oppression of a cage.
A man who had been watching me said, “Wait, my friend!” Those shackled in chains are nothing but thieves of the night, who cast aside all counsel and turned a deaf ear to the call of truth (may He be exalted).
So long as you yourself have not unjustly and oppressively wronged anyone, what harm would it do you (why fear?) if the whole world were to become a guard watching your every move? (Here, perhaps Saadi is referring to God Almighty, who is like a guardian watching over all of creation, the wicked and the virtuous.)
For the worker (employee/servant in this world) who keeps his work free from deceit and fraud will have no fear of being questioned by the two angels, Munkar and Nakir, in the grave, or of the reports filed against him by informers.
But if behind your supposed piety lies hidden deceit, know that your tongue will falter and will not dare to speak on the Day of Judgment.
And know that the person of good character and reputation will not be a slave to anyone (not even his own evil-commanding self), as if he were a prisoner. So let your fear be confined to the majesty of the Creator, the Most High, and do not worry by the might of princes
And whenever you perform your duty (my duty) sincerely and in the best way (that pleases God), I will not fear the plots of a malevolent enemy (perhaps referring to Satan or the spiteful, envious one).
And if the servant exerts his effort in the path of obedience to God, with the spirit of true servants, then the Supreme Master (God) will elevate his status and surround him with His glory.
But if the servant is lax and wavering in his servitude, he will descend from the position of the supreme guardian of the soul (for the soul in the human body is a part of the soul of God, the highest rank with God) to become a mere keeper. (like animals in this world, lower in rank than humans)
So hasten your steps forward, so that your spirit may surpass the rank of angels; for if you lag behind the caravan of travelers, you will become in lower rank than the ravenous beasts.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Symbolism of the Blackness of Abyssinia: In Sufi symbolism, “blackness” may refer to the world of matter or the soul before purification, and Saadi begins the story from “exile” (Gharib-e Adem). The seeker is always a stranger in this material world until he reaches his true homeland.
The Shipment and the Diwan (Inner Security): Saadi uses the administrative language of his time (shipment, worker, Diwan) to establish a spiritual truth; The point is that “divine reckoning” only terrifies those who have mixed their deeds with hypocrisy (deceit), and righteousness is the absolute guarantee of salvation from judgment.
Existential Levels (Jandari and Kharbandgi): Saadi indicates that man is a being in motion through the levels of existence; he is either a “Jandari” (preserving his soul and spirit in the stations of divine proximity), or he falls into “Kharbandgi” (toiling for material desires like an animal).
Transcending the level of angels: This refers to a Sufi doctrine derived from the story of the Ascension (Mi’raj). Through will, striving, and repentance, a person can attain spiritual stations (within two bow lengths) that even angels, compelled to obedience, cannot reach. Falling, however, reduces them to a level lower than animals.
Fear of God, not of the ruler: this is the “glory of monotheism.” Whoever fears God, God makes everything fear him; and whoever fears other than God, God makes him fear everything.
This story from Saadi Shirazi’s book, Bustan, means that purity of heart and integrity of action are the true shield that grants a person a tranquility unshaken by the power of rulers or the cunning of adversaries. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to understand that the dignity of the servant is contingent upon the sincerity of his striving in the sanctuary of servitude, affirming that human existence is a field of… To ascend to the level of the angels or descend to the rank of beasts, and that “the Truth” is the only Reckoner deserving of reverence.
