Saadi compares the animal’s instinct to conceal guilt with guilt of human being

Consider the cat; if it commits an unseemly act (relieving itself) in a clean place, when it feels ashamed of its action, it hides it under layers of dust.

So, are you—O human being—free from committing reprehensible and shameful acts, so that you do not fear that the eyes of creation—or the eye of the Creator—will fall upon your misdeeds?

Consider the plight of that servant burdened with sins, who tries to hide from the sight of his Master (the Most High) for a time, thinking that veils prevent Him from seeing (his shameful deeds).

If this servant does not willingly repent with a sincere and humble confession of need for God, he will be brought forth tomorrow, shackled by the chains of compulsion and the fetters of divine decree, to face his fate on the Day of Resurrection.

If you wish to harbor enmity towards someone, then compete with those from whom you can escape or from whom you can be independent. But how dare you harbor enmity towards the Creator, the Most High, from whose grasp there is no escape and in whose presence alone you find refuge?

The time for self-reflection is now, while you are in this life (this world, while you are alive), not at the moment when the records of deeds are published and secrets are revealed against your will (after your death, and are presented for judgment on the Day of Resurrection).

And whoever has wronged, then returns to self-reflection with sincere sorrow before the Day of Gathering (the Day of Resurrection), it is as if he had not committed any wrong. For the anguish of repentance erases the stain of sin.

If the exhalation of breaths (the sigh) clouds the clarity of the physical mirror and darkens its face, then it is the sighs of remorse that polish the rust of hearts and restore the light to the mirror of the soul.

So let your fear now—in every breath you take—be confined to your sins, so that you may arrive on the Day of Great Reckoning (the Day of Judgment, when all people will be judged) safe and fearing no one.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

The Cat Metaphor (Garbah): Saadi uses a striking simile; The cat instinctively and modestly covers its droppings with dirt, while humans leave the “dust of sins” exposed without the “dust of repentance.” This lesson aims to crush the “pride of the sinner” by comparing him to a mute animal.

The Slave and the Master (Bandeh and Khawaja): In mystical practice, “hiding from God” is the height of heedlessness, and the slave who thinks he is far from his master’s sight is a veiled slave. Repentance is “fleeing from God to Him” before the “forced dragging” in the chains of death.

The Book’s Publication: A reference to the “Station of the Greatest Presentation,” and the mystics perform the process of “publishing the book” daily (accounting) to purify the pages before they are presented to the King of Kings.

The Chemistry of Ah (Ah): A stunning verbal and conceptual play. In ancient physics, a “sigh” (a hot breath) dulls a metal mirror, but in spiritual alchemy, the “sigh” of the repentant sinner is the elixir that purifies the heart, and tears and sighs are the tools for polishing the mirror of the soul.

Security on the Day of Judgment: Saadi establishes a principle: He who fears God in this world will be secure in the next. Fear of sin (shortcomings) with every breath brings absolute tranquility when the records are opened on the Day of Judgment.

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that shame before sin should precede the act itself, and that self-accountability is the only way to overcome the awe of the momentous occasion. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to the “philosophy of purifying remorse,” which transforms the “sighs of brokenness” into a light for the mirror of the soul. The heart, affirming that the wise person is the one who conceals the shame of their actions with the dust of repentance before the records are published and they are prevented from apologizing.
