Attachment to worldly things hinders a person from rising to higher levels

We are now faced with a mystical and ethical epic that rebukes the soul for its “baseness of ambition,” where Sa’ib al-Tabrizi emerges as a “painter of ideas” who uses his “new style” to transform abstract concepts into tangible, material images like “the spider’s web” and “the caravan’s bell.”

English Translation

Why are you lazy in seeking the Truth, the Most High, like the people of desires? You have a long road ahead, why look back (right and left)?

Sa’ib establishes a “philosophy of movement,” where he sees that looking back at the material past is an “obstacle” that prevents the soul from traversing the distances of longing for the Beloved, and commitment to the goal is the essence of mystical “quest.”

Gratitude for blessings (the state) is shown by helping the deprived. Why imprison this blessed bird of fortune within the cage of selfishness?

Saeb overturns the balance of justice, for him, blessings are like a “flying bird” that flees when bound by stinginess, and remains when shared with others.

And in this lowly, perpetually decaying world, why do you weave, like a spider, the threads of your life to catch mere flies (the trivialities of materialism)?

This image is the essence of “the meaning of asceticism.” Saeb likens worldly hopes to fragile “spiderwebs,” and says that spending one’s life gathering debris is a pursuit unworthy of human dignity.

On this long road, where one must plead for even a single breath, why waste your life on empty words like the ringing of a bell?

Saïb refers to “self-care,” and the bell rings loudly but is hollow, just as the person who fills their world with noise without inner meaning is hollow.

Why search for a jewel (a pleasure) that slips through your fingers, risking your life like a diver who has run out of air?

Saïb warns against becoming engrossed in worldly materialism. This world is a false gem that drains human life to no avail.

Those with insight must preserve their dignity; so why turn the wellspring of wisdom within you into a trap for flies (for base purposes)?

The station of “self-sufficiency,” for Sa’ib sees human perfection as a pure spring, and its defilement by worldly obsessions is a betrayal of nature.

And indeed, the Helper (God) responds when the cry reaches its peak; so why withhold supplication when you are before the One who answers prayers?

Sa’ib praises the station of “neediness”; For God removes the rust of worry from the heart that cries out sincerely, and silence in prayer here is a kind of hidden pride.

While you can paint a long sigh of regret, why make the canvas of your heart a blackboard for the trials of passion?

And the fervor of spring makes every bud a nightingale’s beak; so why cease to sing of your existence in the spring of life?

Just like a naive child in the lush garden of time, why make your taste bitter by eating unripe fruit?

And there is no true work in this house of perpetual terror (the world); Why build your nest in this cramped cage?

He who is pure from sin is safe from the turmoil of questioning and answering. If you are not a traitor, why do you fear the guard?

Living among the vile darkens the heart. Why waste the water of life on thorns, straw, and all that is worthless?

A quiver full of arrows becomes an easy target for others because of its distinctive colors. Why are you deceived by bright clothes, like a child?

On the long, distant road, where the soul is scorched by lightning and wind, why do you sleep soundly, awaiting the caravan’s bell (death)?

And in the clear arena of revelation (unveiling the secret), as plain as a mirror, why do you seek light from a small flame, you short-sighted one (of thought)?

O Saeb, the wicked soul never learns; so why waste your time trying to restrain this mad dog (the soul that incites evil) with a thousand ropes?

In the conclusion of “Despair of the Self,” Saïb uses the image of the “mad dog” to prove that merely disciplining the material self is not enough; rather, it must be “transcended” entirely to reach the state of annihilation.

Sufi and mystical meanings

In this Ghazal, Sa’ib establishes the concept of “the knowledge of high aspirations”; He believes that preoccupation with “Mags” (flies/worldly things) prevents the soul from experiencing the state of “Al-Huma” (the Divine).

The concept of “Tar and Pod Spider” indicates that the material world, however organized it may seem, is a fragile house that only ensnares “heedless” minds. He also calls for “unifying the moaning and supplication” so that the focus is solely on God, without any other.

Summary of the Ghazal

It’s the message of “the rhetorical question,” which aims to break “habit,” and Saeb believes that man wrongs himself when he lives like a “bell” that rings without substance, or like a “spider” content with catching flies, as it is the anthem of “spiritual awakening.” The ropes of attachment to the self (the “badkardar”) must be severed to release the soul towards the Kingdom of Transfiguration.

Words for learning:

Darwizah: Begging (Darwizah breath: The insistent request for breath)
Jaras: The bell (a symbol of empty noise)
Asas: The guard or policeman
Qabas: A flame or a spark of light
Maras: The twisted rope (for tying Animals)
Huma: a mythical bird, a symbol of honor and happiness.
