The Heart is a Canopy for the Manifestations of the Beloved

This Ghazal represents the epic of “The Sultanate of Imagination and the Annihilation of the Speaker”; Where, with his mystical insight, Kamal weaves how the heart becomes a canopy for the manifestations of the Beloved, transforming the elements of the body (water and clay) into a dwelling place for sacred sorrow, and considering that all beauty in Paradise does not rise to the dust of the threshold of Truth.

English Translation

O You for whom our heart has become a raised canopy for the dominion of Your most holy splendor, the pain of separation and sorrow has established a home for longing for You, in every atom of our bodies.

We will not raise our heads in reverence for the gardens of Paradise, even if they hung down to us like strands of Your hair; for we have no desire for those gardens, as long as our home is the dust of Your threshold.

And our greatest dilemma, the one without solution, is the secret of Your mouth, for that one has given us a choice between existence and non-existence, and this enigma will not be solved, except by the logic of your lips that guide us to the truth.

If the candle itself refuses to burn its wick like the other lamps to illuminate our gathering, then when Your radiant countenance shines forth at night, our souls will be content with Your light, needing no borrowed light.

So, O Sheikh, beseech God that we may all perish in the love of the Beloved. So that our Beloved may not be tainted by the shame of shedding the blood of lovers who do not deserve this honor.

And however much our eyes overflow with eloquent tears (even if our tears fall like jewels of sorrow for the Beloved), the Beloved remains averse to hearing our humble words, due to his Exalted status.

But when that moon (the Beloved) saw the flood of tears upon Kamal’s eyelashes, He said: Indeed, who truly seeks us when he weeps, he will deserve a treasure (Pearls) in his private chamber (during prayer and supplication), more precious than lavishing alms upon him.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The symbolism of “Dahan” (the nonexistent mouth): In Gnostic poetry, the beloved’s mouth is described as a “phantom point” or “nonexistent.” This symbolizes the Divine essence, which cannot be comprehended in any way, and the “problem” of existence can only be resolved by the “utterance” of truth through His sacred word.

The station of “annihilation and shame”: In the fifth verse, he reaches the pinnacle of mystical humility, for he seeks death not for comfort, but because he sees the persistence of the “self” as a diminution of the Beloved’s majesty. “Khun” (the shame of blood) is a pun meaning that the lover’s blood is too precious to be stained by the beauty of truth.

The pun of “the descending” and “the essence”: It contrasts the perfection between “the warmth of the descending” (humbly spoken words) and “the essence of tears.” The wise person sees that the eloquence of the situation (weeping) is more truthful than the eloquence of words, yet the beloved remains self-sufficient, with its beauty surpassing both of them

“The Beloved’s Beggar”: Sheikh Kamal concludes with his name, portraying himself as a “beggar” at the door of truth. The good news here is that the Beloved recognizes the value of his tears, transforming his poverty into wealth through the “pearls” that flow from his eyes.

Summary of Ghazal

Sheikh Kamal believes that the lover’s heart is the temple in which he resides. The imagination of reality, and love, for him, is the key to understanding the meaning of existence (the riddle of the mouth), and salvation is only achieved through absolute annihilation, which protects the beauty of the beloved from the taint of otherness (attachment to the world), and every tear shed on this path is a precious jewel in the scales of perfection.
