In this Ghazal, the venerable Sheikh Sa’adi lays his scalpel on the reality of “impartiality” and “competence”; He explained that entering the sanctuary of divine love is not a mere claim, but rather a complete detachment from worldly power and a burning in the fires of ecstasy that precede the descent of sacred balms.
English Translation
Anyone who is not like Ibrahim ibn Adham (the king of Balkh, who abandoned his kingdom seeking God’s acceptance) in true detachment and asceticism from worldly attachments will not be worthy of entering the sanctuary of Your sacred love.
For crossing this threshold (the sacred sanctuary) requires from you (O seeker/traveler) a detachment comparable to the asceticism of Bayazid al-Bistami and al-Junayd. Know then that the state of detachment from worldly things (this world) attained by these sheikhs is not achieved through instruction or outward imitation, but rather it is a state that God casts into the heart of the true seeker of His path.
And those hidden secrets that the great sheikh entrusted in the depths of his heart are not something to be coveted by every passing mind. Not all souls are prepared to understand the symbols of the unseen or to unlock the seals of truth.
And no one will reach the station of the chosen seeker (the elect) in all the worlds, unless he first casts off the crowns of worldly dominion from his shoulders; True sovereignty begins where worldly desires end.
How can you hope to attain the bliss of the Hereafter while clinging to the fleeting trappings of this world? Know for certain that reconciling the two is an impossible goal, one that cannot coexist in the same place (the heart).
And if the wise person suffers harm or hostility from the foolish and the rabble, he receives it with a cheerful heart and inner joy, seeing in their affliction a purification for himself. Thus, he knows no sorrow or grief except for the sake of God.
For if a base, (base stone) were to fall upon a vessel of pure gold and shatter it, that would not increase the value of the stone’s insignificance, nor would the break diminish the preciousness of the gold by a single iota, even if it were to scatter into fragments.
So, O Sa’adi, if the pain of longing and affliction overwhelms you, then rejoice in the nearness of healing. For the divine merciful ointments (treatment) descend only upon bleeding wounds (those who bear the pain of true Divine love), and he who has not tasted the bitterness of pain will not be worthy of the touch of Divine tenderness (healing).
Contextual and Mystical Footnotes
Ibrahim ibn Adham (Har Brahim… Adham Nashud): A historical and mystical reference to the king of Balkh who abandoned his throne to become a dervish. Sheikh Saadi asserts that mere name or claim does not make one like “Adham,” but rather “action” is necessary, which is relinquishing attachment to the world.
Bayezid and Junayd: They are the two poles of Sufism; Bayezid represents the school of “intoxication/dissolution in divine love and ecstasy,” while Junayd represents the school of “sobriety and moderation.” For them, abstraction is the “death of the ego,” leaving only God.
Gold and stone: a social and mystical metaphor. The stone represents the ignorant/harmful, and its value does not increase by harming gold, which represents the knowing/generous/wise. Breaking a golden vessel may change its form, but it does not change its precious “essence/metal.”
The philosophy of pain and healing (Dard and Darman): a major Sufi principle. Pain (longing and affliction) is the magnet that attracts healing (divine manifestation and mercy), and whoever lives in complete comfort is truly deprived of the divine “balm/cure.”
This Sermon means:
That deserving divine closeness is contingent upon true detachment from worldly desires and the annihilation of selfishness before the Creator’s majesty. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it shows that “spiritual pain” is the only gateway to attaining healing, affirming that the precious essence is not diminished by the follies of the ignorant, and that combining material servitude with spiritual freedom is a union of opposites that cannot coexist in the heart of the true seeker. The Beloved
