The Human body is a Lantern it must be broken

This Ghazal is the pinnacle of “reproachful questioning” in the work of Sa’ib al-Tabrizi, where he manifests as a “painter of ideas,” transforming philosophical concepts of the transience of life and the fading of hopes into tangible, material images.

English Translation

Why do you stifle the sigh that burns the world within your chest? And how can you clothe lightning in the garment of (surrounding glass) the lantern (to imprison its light)?

Saïb employs the “method of equation,” likening spiritual emotion to “lightning” and the body to “the lantern’s sheath”—the glass that protects the flame from being extinguished while simultaneously allowing the lantern’s light to remain. This is a call for truth, for luminous truth cannot be confined within the molds of matter.

And between the past and the future, you possess only a single breath. Why all this fuss and noise for a fleeting moment (this world)?

The philosophy of “self-care” holds that a person’s value lies in the spiritual “now,” and that preoccupation with “long-term hopes” is a great deception of insight.

For the garment that does not grow from your body (i.e., material things) is food for the shears of annihilation (inevitable fate). Why cling like thorns to borrowed clothes?

This is the poet’s “strange meaning,” where he connects the word “la” (no) with the shape of scissors that sever the neck of the unsuspecting, and every material thing that is “borrowed” is destined to perish.

So if the world is lost to you, then your enemy is buried in the dust (you are freed from the attachments and enmities of the world). Why do you wring your hands in anguish and regret over it?

“The Portrayal of Regret,” where Sa’ib inverts the concept of loss; for the loss of material possessions is salvation from the “ego,” which is the true enemy of the seeker on the path of truth, the Most High.

The sea creates crowns and medals from bubbles and waves; so why do you tremble with fear over your tattered rag?

The paradox of the “bubble” (or “float”), where Sa’ib believes that whoever dissolves in the “sea of truth” attains honor, while clinging to appearances (the rag) is a sign of a lack of ambition.

Every leaf that sprouts on the branch is a hand wringing out regret; so why laugh in vain in this house of mourning?

The paradox of “leaf and fruit,” where Saeb sees nature as a mirror of existential pain, where the “vegetation” that people see as a source of joy, is seen by the enlightened as a lament for the loss of essence.

What is the value of this world to you, that you would soil your hands with it? And why do you accept the role of a plate-licker (of leftover food) when you possess the table of Solomon (contentment)?

The station of “The Ant of Contentment,” where Sa’ib affirms that the knowledgeable person committed to contentment is equal to kings in the moral scales.

And they have hidden the water of life within the agate of patience; so why not drink such sweet water?

The embodiment of meaning, for patience is not a drought, but rather the “spring of eternity,” where Sa’ib sees that enduring the bitterness of patience leads to an eternal “quenching” of the soul.

And at this time (dawn), when the table of divine bounty is spread out, why do you remain heavy of spirit, like others, never moving from your place?

The spiritual value of morning, for the righteous, is the moment of “revelation of truth,” and inaction in the face of “inner struggle” at this time is the height of heedlessness.

Ultimately, you will inevitably pass from this garden (this world) like the wind; so why cling to every tree (anything available to you to hold on to tightly) like a grapevine?

The philosophy of “detachment” correctly criticizes “attachment” (material attachment). The person who clings to worldly possessions like a vine loses their ability to “fly” towards their origin (the Creator, the source of all creation).

Therefore, abandoning material pursuits is the only true path to reaching home (your final resting place). So why lengthen your journey by striving in the wrong direction?

The station of “submission,” where Sa’ib sees “human planning” as a veil; for attainment is not achieved through physical striving but through annihilation in the divine will.

So, Sa’ib, bitterness is the nature of every healing medicine; so why not listen willingly to bitter words (true advice, even if it is bitter to you)?

“The eloquence of dryness,” where advice is rejected by the “ego,” but Saeb sees it as “alchemy” that refines the metal of the soul.

Sufi and Gnostic Meanings

In this love poem, Saïb establishes the foundation for “the gnosis of liberation”; He sees the body as a “lantern” that must be broken for the lightning of the soul to shine forth, and the concept of “the shears of annihilation” indicates that death lies in wait for the physical “collar” of man. He also calls for abandoning “planning” (Kushish) so that the heart may find solace in “surrender.”

The essence of the ghazal is:

It’s “The Song of Aesthetic Awakening,” where Sa’ib believes that man wrongs himself when he He is content with the role of the “licker” at the tables of this world, while the “agate of patience,” filled with the water of life, awaits him in the hereafter. Every verse here is a cry to shatter the shell of human worldly habit.
