Human is a Heedless Farmer in this world

English Translation

Why do you sacrifice your precious soul for the sake of worldly desires? How can you offer up the sacred treasure (the heart) as a sacrifice to fleeting idols?

What is the value of this world that one should cling to it? And why do you wrap the belt of disbelief (the girdle) in the Holy Quran?

It is difficult to cross the desert of nothingness without provisions; O farmer, why not consider sowing the seeds of good deeds now (for the Hereafter)?

There is no lock that cannot be opened by the yearning supplication in the middle of night; so why do you remain so bewildered by the knots of your heart?

It is not wise for a person to sell their faith for worldly gain; so why would you sell your soul (Joseph/the meaning) for counterfeit coins (the silver of the heart), O you fool?

If there is no just scale, like fairness, in this market, and if such a scale truly exists, why not weigh the essence of your soul by it?

It is neither fair nor rational to exchange jewels for dust; so why would you squander your dignity for a morsel of bread?

And laughter born of ignorance is a breach that will destroy the palace of life. Why do you smile with every passing breeze, just like a deceived rose?

There is no dragon that devours humankind like the length of hope; so why do you enter the lair of this serpent without caution?

You can live honorably in the paradise of contentment (without needing anyone) by eating barley bread in this world (a metaphor for humility and neediness before God); so why do you swallow bitterness and blood (pain) for the sake of the various blessings of this world?

For pain becomes medicine when it truly controls the soul; so why do you endure humiliation before the doctor’s pampering and the favor of treatment?

A heavy ship quickly stops and becomes immobile if it becomes stuck in the mud; so why burden your body with food and drink (bread and water) until it is unable to move, confined within four walls?

The heavenly spirits (the Heavenly Fathers) eagerly await your coming; so why remain imprisoned in the cradle of matter like a child?

Alexander’s fortune, yearning and thirsting, longs to possess you; so why do you hide in darkness, O Fountain of Life?

The very golden crowns of kings are attached to your path, awaiting your arrival at any moment. Why do you cling to this shell (the physical body), O radiant essence?

For the Kaaba lies at the end of the long night journey; so why are you unable to proceed, folding your feet beneath your cloak like a steadfast mountain?

And for the sake of a fleeting life/a moment of hope, why do you withdraw from the infinite and boundless sea, like a reckless, empty bubble (fearing to burst and perish at any moment)?

For abandoning the animalistic traits of the soul is the revival of true life; so why continue to deprive yourself of this unending grace?

The shore of the sea of desires is nothing but the mouth of the whale; so, O Sa’ib, why do you sail upon this raging sea, which has no end?

Mystical and Gnostic Meanings

In this Ghazal, the poet Sa’ib al-Tabrizi establishes the foundations of “the gnosis of intelligent asceticism.” He sees that “detachment” is the true provision for the traveler to God, and the concept of “Joseph of Meaning” indicates that the soul is a divine trust that cannot be sold in the market of “desires.” He also calls for the station of “contentment” (nan ju/barley bread) as a paradise existing in this world that protects man from the “serpent” of greed.

Summary of Ghazal

Ghazal is “the song of eradication from The illusion,” Sa’ib sees man as a heedless “peasant” who toils on land that is not his, clinging to the “shell” of matter while the crowns of the Kingdom await him. It is a critique of every instance of “unjust exchange” between the soul and the world.
