This Ghazal represents an epic of “honesty in poverty/submission”; Where Sheikh Kamal, with his mystical insight, weaves how the beloved’s sorrow becomes a companion to the soul severed from worldly attachments, and how the lover is transformed into a “bankrupt” one, begging for the elixir of truth, purified from the hypocrisy of coldness and false claims.
English Translation
O you whose sorrow of separation has become a companion to my wretchedness and a friend to my nothingness (all the nothingness and wretchedness I live with); For I have with this sorrow ties that run deep in antiquity, and bonds of intimacy that know no separation.
For from the lamp of your radiant countenance emanated a light towards the center of my sight, dispelling the darkness of my oppressive night, and transforming my bewilderment into light.
And my feet flee from the hardship of this path of Yours, but You answered me with true certainty: For how long will this wander or hesitation last?, As far as you distance yourself from this path (The God path), to Me is your final destination.
And the dog of your neighborhood (the soul that incites evil, which prevents the lover from being annihilated within the Beloved) appeared to me in the form of a guarding protector; but this appearance was nothing but a form of pretense and selfishness, at your threshold.
Yet despite that, we are a group of the destitute (we own nothing at all, we have forsaken the world and all that is in it), and we have melted in Your love, and we have no desire but the drink of Your union, we’re standing at your threshold, and implore kindness from Your lips.
For you are not a naive lover without knowing true love from Samarkand, nor a outwardly ascetic, so why all this pretense of coldness, this feigned piety that obscures the true beauty of you, is not good, and don’t suit you.
O Kamal, cleanse your hands of the filth of deception (feigning asceticism and love for the Beloved), with the sincerity of gambling with the soul (true love for the Beloved, annihilation in Him, and the sacrifice of everything, even the soul for Him), and purify yourself with a luminous (Divine) drink from every impurity that accompanies the doctrine of loyalty (to the Beloved).
Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes
The Station of “Ashna’i” (Ancient Knowledge): Sheikh Kamal refers to the covenant of “Am I not your Lord?” The sorrow of love is not something that comes suddenly; rather, it is an ancient “Ashna” (knowledge) that dwells in the soul before it dwells in the body. This sorrow is what refines the knower and renews his covenant with the Most High Truth.
The symbolism of “Sag Kui” (the dog of the neighborhood): In the literature of Sheikh Kamal, the dog at the threshold of the beloved may represent the outward “guardian,” but mystically it represents everything that prevents the servant from… Entering due to “self-centeredness” (self-perception), even competing with the threshold dog is considered by the Sheikh to be a deficiency in annihilation, because the bankrupt lover sees only the Beloved.
Criticism of “coldness and superficial asceticism”: Sheikh Kamal uses the word “coldness” (which literally means coldness and figuratively means absurdity) to describe The state of one who claims piety without the spark of love, and the divine beloved is free from the constraints of the “ascetics” who worship God with cold minds; The path to it is “masti” (intoxication/dissolution) and “badeh” (drink).
The allegory of “pakbazi” (gambling with the soul): The sheikh concludes with his name “Kamal,” calling himself to complete purification. In Sufism, a pakbaz is one who leaves nothing for himself. Washing the hands here is a metaphor for disavowing “dagha” (deception), which is represented by the claim of… Sufism with the Persistence of Selfishness
Meaning of (Ne Samarkandi Ne Zahid chist
Khankiha and Parsaiha)
Samarkandi: Belonging to Samarkand, currently in Uzbekistan (a reference to treachery and coldness): In Persian literature, the inhabitants of Transoxiana, especially Samarkand and Bukhara, were known for their beauty, but also for their rebelliousness, treachery, and cruelty in love.
On the other hand, Sheikh Kamal Khujandi himself was from Khujand (currently in Tajikistan) and was very familiar with the culture of that region.
The ascetic (a symbol of dryness and apathy): In Sufi literature, the ascetic always represents a symbol of superficial piety, dryness, lack of taste, and avoidance of true love and immersion in passion.
Khankiha: The word “khank” in the colloquial and literary language of that time meant coldness, lack of taste, rigidity, and inappropriate behavior. (A cold, aloof demeanor that blinds the passion of love)
General Concept of the Verse
The poet addresses his audience (the lover or the outwardly pious ascetic), saying:
You are neither a heartless, treacherous lover from Samarkand, nor a truly austere ascetic in your piety; so why all this coldness and rigidity within you, and all this pretense of chastity and piety? These extreme behaviors are utterly unbecoming of you!
Summary of Ghazal
Sheikh Kamal believes that true love is based on “bankruptcy” of personal desires, and that fleeing from the path of truth is merely an illusion, for the light of the “lamp of the cheek” pursues the lover in every darkness. Reaching “perfection” requires abandoning pretense and purifying the soul with the drink of sincerity, so that the servant may remain Pure as a “pakbaz”, possessing nothing but its poverty.
