This Ghazal represents the surgeon’s scalpel, slicing open the veil of hypocrisy to expose the glaring contradiction between outward appearance and inner reality. It moves from a critique of superficial religiosity to a philosophy of essence and reliance on divine favor.
English Translation
What is the point of turning your face towards the mosque while your heart resides in the haunts of lust? What good is wearing the cloak of asceticism over your shoulders when your waist is secretly bound by the thread of attachment to worldly things?
And he who prostrates himself before the idols of his desires in his private moments, what is the meaning of his boasting of faith and piety amidst the gatherings of the marketplace and the clamor of the people?
If the inner self is pure, then there is no fear of the impurity of outward appearances; but what use is the beauty and splendor of the turban upon a head devoid of reason and intellect?
When a person’s nature and disposition resist the wise’s treatment, what good are effective medicines or the patient’s wailing and lamenting?
If the power of memory and the ability to retain information are not transformed into penetrating thought and insightful vision, what is the point of wasting one’s life in the clamor of repeating empty lessons?
For the state of love cannot coexist with the pride of the soul, O Sa’adi. If a servant is deprived of the blessing of eternal happiness from God Almighty, what is the point of his toil and bitter striving in this world?
Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes
The Inner Girdle (Zinar): In the school of thought of Sheikh Saadi, the girdle is not merely a garment, but rather a “contraction of the heart” to other than God. A person may wear the robe of asceticism (the cloak), but his heart prostrates itself to wealth or status. This is the “hidden polytheism” that Sheikh Saadi warns against in his sermon.
The Turban and the Core: Sheikh Saadi reiterates the idea of ”essence and appearance”; The head (the seat of reason) is the intended focus, while the turban is a fleeting adornment. Adorning oneself with outward knowledge while devoid of inner understanding is a form of intellectual idolatry.
The Predestination of Treatment (Wise Providence): Sheikh Saadi alludes to the state of “eternal readiness.” Guidance is in the hands of God (the Wise). If the soul is not prepared to receive, material means are ineffective in changing its essence.
The Futility of Repetition: Sheikh Saadi criticizes “robust memorization,” which does not cultivate understanding. For Sufis, knowledge is “a light that God casts into the heart,” not merely an accumulation of words.
Love and arrogance: For Sheikh Saadi, love is “the annihilation of the ego.” The arrogant person sees only himself, while the lover sees only the Beloved (God). Therefore, they are opposites that cannot coexist.
This sermon means:
Inner sincerity and purity of heart are the criteria for acceptance and truth, and that deceptive appearances and grand claims are of no use in place of substance. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it demolishes the edifices of hypocrisy and guides the seeker to understand that knowledge without thought, worship without sincerity, and mysticism with arrogance are nothing but scattered dust. It affirms that true happiness is pure divine grace, bestowed only upon broken hearts that have relinquished their pride.
