English Translation
Why do you allow anything other than the Truth, the Most High, to enter the sanctuary of your heart? And why do you draw false lines on the page of your existence?
He embodies the “embodiment of meanings.” Where the heart is transformed into a sacred sanctuary and existence into a blank page, and preoccupation with material things is a futile endeavor that erases the essence of reality.
After you depart from the abode of the body (your place of residence that binds you to this world), you will find no other realm; so why not prepare for your journey from this dwelling?
He resorts to the technique of “capturing time.” For the body is considered a “lodge” for travelers, and this is a cry for awakening from “long-term hopes” and an invitation to invest in the lasting “legacy” you leave behind in this world, to build your abode in the Hereafter with the deeds of this world.
As long as the soul remains, do not grieve over the collapse of the walls of the four elements (the body or the space you inhabit between four walls); O Layla of the world, why do you mourn your fleeting palanquin?
The paradox of “the litter and the carried,” where the poet addresses the soul as “Layla” (a symbol of pure beauty), emphasizing that the body is merely a litter (a palanquin) of no value compared to the splendor of the One who dwells within it.
Settle matters with the sword of death while you are still alive; why complicate things for yourself?
The station of “Die before you die” leads Sa’ib to believe that “voluntary annihilation” (abandoning attachments to this world) is the path to facilitating the soul’s passage to the realm of truth.
Every breath you take devoid of awareness is a poisoned sword; so why do you throw yourself upon this sword, every moment, O heedless one?
The philosophy of “cherishing the remaining breath” is that breath, according to Sa’ib, is an instrument of life when God is remembered within it, and an instrument of destruction when wasted in frivolity.
And the eyes of the valley dwellers have grown white from waiting for you; so why all this lingering in the neighborhood, O caravan of life?
“The Humanization of Waiting,” where the arrival is depicted as a slow-moving caravan, which only intensifies the “rust of longing” in the hearts of those yearning to journey towards the Truth, the Most High.
And in its intense longing for You, the sea tears at its collar with a flood; so why do you cling to your place, O torrent imprisoned in its home?
The paradox of “the flood and the sea”: the flood’s nature is to flow, and for Sa’ib, stillness is the death of meaning; for life is “movement” towards the source of annihilation (the sea).
And the eyes of the victims do not close after slaughter; so why do you try to close my bewildered eyes, O beloved killer?
The station of “witnessing after annihilation,” where Sa’ib sees that “bewilderment” is the lover’s constant state, and that death in the path of God Almighty sharpens insight rather than obscures it.
This is a station of state, not of idle talk; so why do you disturb the serenity of our moment with your excessive words, O intellect (the wise one)?
“Critique of Materialist Reason,” where Saïb distinguishes between “ecstasy” and “rational logic”; for the path to God is traversed by the passionate heart, not by the cautious mind.
The morning breeze has been perfumed by the mingling of buds; so why don’t you mingle with the people of pure hearts in this flourishing garden?
“The Humanization of the Breeze,” for Sa’ib believes that “spiritual contagion” is transmitted through companionship; for associating with the enlightened (the bud) makes one’s soul a divine breath.
And a single drop is enough to nourish our seed. Why does your rain take so long, O generous cloud?
The Station of “Hope in Abundance,” where Saïb points out that divine mercy is vast, but the servant awaits the moment of “manifestation” (the drop) to be reborn.
For the dust of the desert of nothingness is sweeter than the blood of existence; so why do you tremble so much, fearing for your life, O sacrifice in the hands of the Beloved?
“The Aesthetics of Annihilation,” for Saïb, nothingness is not emptiness, but rather the true abode of the soul, far removed from the turbidity of attachment to matter.
And when you surrender to fate, the mouth of the whale itself becomes a shore of salvation; so why cling to this fate with the fringes of the material shore?
The pinnacle of “the philosophy of surrender,” Saïb overturns the familiar. He transforms danger (the mouth of the whale) into safety for those who accept God’s will, turning destruction into refuge.
So seek light from the foreheads of those with pure hearts; why would you leave this luminous gathering with your candle (your soul) extinguished?
The station of “spiritual inspiration,” where Sa’ib sees that the people of God are sources of radiance, and that leaving their presence without attaining “the light of certainty” is the greatest loss.
And indeed, dew ascended to the throne of heaven by gazing upon the sun; so why do you close your eyes to the face of the perfect guide (God)?
The “equation method” in education is like the sun lifting the dew with its heat (causing it to evaporate), and the mentor elevates the seeker with his “chemical” vision; advancement is contingent upon “vision.”
O you who have drawn the eyes of the entire world to your beauty, why do you not turn your gaze upon the face of the one (Saeb) who has lost his heart?
The conclusion of “The Aesthetic Supplication,” where Sa’ib acknowledges his own annihilation (Bidil) and seeks divine “attention,” which is the ultimate grace after all this longing.
The Sufi and Gnostic Meanings
In this Ghazal, Sa’ib establishes the foundation for “the gnosis of submission and witnessing.” He believes that everything that frightens a person (like the mouth of a whale or death) transforms into a “shore” simply by shedding the cloak of “ego.” The concept of “Shabnam’s Ascent/The Ascent of the Call” indicates that divine manifestation (the sun) is what burns away density and elevates subtlety. It also calls for the “silence of the mind” so that the “state of ecstasy” may speak.
Summary of Ghazal
It is a message “A rebuke to the hesitant soul,” where Saïb sees that man wrongs his being by clinging to the “carrier” (the body) while the sacred “desert of nothingness” awaits him, and it is the anthem of “trust in the Absolute.” Where it doesn’t matter where you stand, but where you look, for it is the “guide’s gaze” that creates the ascent.
