In this part, the poet Nizami moves from describing the pure prophetic essence to showing the Messenger’s high place as the center of mercy and the direction for wandering minds. He uses his complex, almost magical language that mixes beautiful images with deep spiritual meaning.
English Translation
O you whose noble body is purer than the purest souls, and whose spirit was raised in the station of “May my soul be your ransom” — the place where souls fade away in honor of your luminous being.
(Companions of the Prophet, when they wanted to show their strong love and respect, used to say to him: “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God,” or “My soul is a sacrifice for your soul.”)
You are the center of the circle of mercy and the pole around which it turns. By your grace the dot of hardship is erased, so that difficulty turns into wide mercy.
You are the guiding moon for the Arab travelers on the path, and you are the straight road for the confused and lost among the non-Arabs.
Through you people find the way to the truth, yet you are too great to be called only a simple guide. You are the master of the village of existence, and your spirit is free from any need for those who live in it.
Noble people like you, when they look at the stage of creation, do not seek safety only for themselves — they carry every living being with them to the shore of safety.
From that holy table where you tasted the fresh dates of revelation — what a blessing! — what leftover did you bring for us?
So kindly open your mouth and speak, so that the world may taste the sweetness of faith from your noble lips, and receive from the overflow of your light fresh dates that bring dead hearts back to life.
O you whose black locks of hair are the dawn of salvation for us, and the fire of longing for you is the very water of life that gives eternal life to the souls.
The mind has been captured, enchanted by the beauty of your face, and the locks of your hair have become a chain that leads the wandering lovers to your sanctuary.
The turning sky is nothing but a humble servant to your glory, and the light of morning is only a smile taken from the sun of your radiant face.
Through you the world received the covering of purity and cleanliness, and by the perfume of your prophethood the navel of the earth turned into a storehouse of musk that pours its fragrance over all the worlds.
In these verses the wise Nizami Ganjavi paints a picture of the Prophet ﷺ as “the shadow of God’s light” that itself has no shadow. He mixes cosmic symbols with religious duties to show the Prophet’s power over time and space.
From the blessing of the dust of your feet, dust itself became perfume, and the body of this world became a source of pure musk.
The dust of your feet is higher than the wind of Solomon, and what can I say about your garden? It is more beautiful than the gardens of Paradise.
The Kaaba is nothing but a prayer-mat waiting for your takbir, thirsty for the sweet drink of your glad tidings, so that it may announce with takbir the near approach of the morning of your guidance.
The world gained honour because of your crown and your throne (because of your nearness to God); the earth became a carpet for you, and the sky became a crown for you.
You have no shadow like other human beings, because you are light like the full moon, and surely you are the shadow of God’s light that shades all creatures.
The pillars of your religion are four flags (the Rightly Guided Caliphs), and the five daily prayers that are performed day and night are the royal ceremonies of your rule over the world.
Through you the dust of the weak and oppressed turned into fresh gardens, and with your light the eyes of the strangers were anointed so they could see the path of the True God.
From the moment your foot stepped on the back of the sky on the night of the Ascension, the hem of your cloak began to drag majesty over the head of the turning heaven.
(Dragging the cloak behind oneself was a sign of power and high rank for kings.)
The lap of the sky filled with the gold of stars and the pearls of planets because of your passing, as if the stitch of your shirt was woven with threads of eternal light.
In the shell of dawn and with the hand of purity, the morning breeze grinds your precious perfume to spread it as fragrance through the horizons.
Truly, wherever the morning breeze goes, the armies of amber raise their flags in recognition of the rule of your perfume.
In the following verses the poet reaches the height of abstraction. He describes the Prophet ﷺ as “the hidden treasure” that God placed in the dust of our humanity, and he ends with a spiritual call asking for the dawn of certainty to shine upon his heart (the poet’s heart).
The fragrant scent that your scented locks of hair carry to the world is so precious that if both worlds (this world and the next) were given as its price, it would still be too cheap.
The Lote Tree of the farthest limit became an ornament for your chest, and the glorious Throne became nothing more than a footstool in the courtyard of your high palace.
When the light of dawn shines from the niche of your need for the Creator, the Throne then looks like scattered dust in the brilliance of that flashing sun.
If the mirror of morning had not revealed its light from behind the veil of majesty, how could your holy light have slipped onto the dust of this earth?
(If the sun had not risen and spread its light over creation, the world could not have known the value of the Prophet’s light, for the Prophet’s light is drawn from the Creator’s light, and the sun reflects that light for the creatures.)
You are the balance of the two worlds — why have you hidden yourself under the veils of dust (in your noble grave)? And if you are not the greatest treasure, why did you choose to be the companion of dust?
As long as you, O pure treasure, have hidden (your body) under the earth, it has become the condition for finding treasures that they must be placed inside the dust.
(Since the noble Prophet is a precious treasure whose body is buried in the earth, humanity must show humility before this valuable jewel and honor his station — this itself is worship of God.)
Your Muhammadan humility is what protected your treasure, and your shadow is the butterfly (your companions) that circles around the lamp of your reality.
The arched sky has become a target (obedient to you) for the arrows of your sighs of longing for God, and the ring of the constellation of Aquarius is nothing but a rope lowered into the well of your knowledge.
These two faces (night and day) are only messengers that run before you, and dust that rises from the arrow of your journey.
The mind seeks healing at your hands and you are its physician, and the moon packs its bags to serve you, for you are its only guest.
So rise — may my soul be your ransom, O Prophet — and turn the night of those who wait into a bright day with your sweet and joyful words, and make the talent of your servant Nizami shine with the joys of meanings, and add delight and happiness to his spirit.
Comments: Mystical and Sufi meanings, and notes on the poet’s verses
The poet begins by glorifying the prophetic body that has become pure light, confirming that the Prophet ﷺ is the key of guidance for both Arabs and non-Arabs.
He uses the image of “the table” to point to the table of revelation and knowledge from which the Prophet ate the dates of nearness, then returned to feed his community from its blessings.
He presents the idea of “the spirit rising above matter”: the Prophet’s body is purer than other souls because it is the true spirit of the cosmic body.
The psychological lesson here lies in the phrase about the mind being enchanted: the poet admits the weakness of the intellect before the prophetic manifestation, meaning that only the insight of the heart can perceive this beauty.
The secret of the dot (rahmat / zahmat): the poet points out that the difference between mercy and hardship in writing is only a single dot, and the Prophet is the one who lifts that dot so that the hardship of creation turns into a gift.
Combining opposites: describing the blackness (of the hair) as “the day of salvation” means that the night of the prophetic unseen is brighter than the day of the world.
The Muhammadan Reality: the Prophet is “the master of the village” whom its directions cannot reach — meaning he controls the worlds while his spirit remains free from their material limits.
People are guided by his guidance, but not by force. He is too noble and rich to need anyone’s door. They find their way to you, O great Prophet; you are not the one who forces them onto the path. Your guidance is not by compulsion (there is no compulsion in religion). Faith depends on a person guiding himself.
The Prophet is the antidote of existence: by his words bitterness turns into sugar, by his perfume the earth is adorned, and by love for him the knots of the minds are untied. The poet invites the reader to take shelter in the “chain” of the lovers in order to obtain the “dates” of divine knowledge.
Nizami portrays the Prophet as a cosmic king to whom the elements submit. The five prayers are like the “royal band” (the military music that used to be played at the gates of kings).
He describes the effect of the Prophet’s foot in the sky on the night of the Ascension as if he embroidered the cloak of the firmament with jewels and gold, and made the breeze the carrier of the perfume of his prophethood.
He establishes the idea of “the luminous human being.” The phrase “you have no shadow” means that the Prophet’s body became so refined that it is transparent and does not block light — a symbol of the disappearance of the material “I” in the light of the True God.
The psychological lesson is that those who are strangers to the truth find peace only by following this light that shines in their inner sight.
The station of “the shadow”: the poet adopts a mystical view that the Prophet is the “barzakh” (isthmus) between the eternal and the created; he is “the shadow of God” meaning the first manifestation of His light in creation.
Sanctifying action: linking the prayers to the “royal ceremony” means that worship is not a burden but an honor and belonging to the court of the King of kings.
The alchemy of prophethood: turning the “dust of the weak” into a garden points to the power of the message to change the essence of the human soul from humiliation to dignity.
The poet sees the Prophet as the standard of cosmic beauty: the morning does not breathe except with his perfume, and the sky is not adorned except by the traces of his footsteps.
The poet ends by portraying the Prophet as the axis around which the spheres turn. The Throne and the Lote Tree are only simple ranks in the hall of his glory. Then he moves to describe the prophetic “poverty” and “humility,” considering that his noble grave is not a place of death but the true “treasury of secrets” where the treasure is kept in the ruins.
The whole Na’t rests on the idea of “the spirit that moves matter.” Nizami sees that “the spirit is the king of the human body,” and the Prophet is “the spirit of the world.”
The psychological lesson lies in turning “poverty” into absolute richness: breaking oneself before God is the fortress that protects the “treasure” of knowledge from being lost.
The secret of “the hidden treasure”: the poet refers to the sacred tradition “I was a hidden treasure,” and makes the Prophet the most complete appearance of this treasure in the world of witnessing.
O you who are a treasure — your poverty and simplicity are enough, like a ruin in which treasures are found (a reference to the story of Khidr and the wall that contained a treasure for the poor, or to the Prophet’s extreme humility). He does not need the show of worldly luxury to have value; he is a hidden treasure in the ruin of apparent poverty.
O source of light — your shadow is enough for the butterfly (your companions) to circle around you. The Prophet needs neither material things nor the glory and power of this world. His material poverty is a cover for his great spiritual treasure, and the light of his being is so bright that it is self-sufficient.
The target of your sigh: the sky, with all its greatness, is the goal and symbol of your hot sigh and prayer, or it itself sighs from the intensity of longing for you.
The ring of Aquarius: the orbit of the star Aquarius or the whirlpool that takes the shape of a circle and a bucket.
The rope of the well: the rope and the well-rope; that is, the heavens and the universe are like ropes and buckets used in the well of your power and will.
These lines picture the rank of the Prophet’s Ascension and his elevation, saying that the whole system of creation, the turning heavens, and the means of the world are all in the hand of the will of the Prophet of Islam and under his command.
The sky, with all its vastness, is only a drop compared to his greatness.
The direction of no-direction: describing the Throne as a “particle” in the sun of the Prophet means that the prophetic station has gone beyond the limits of place and matter.
The poet ends by admitting his own inability. The final request “make Nizami’s talent shine with joy” means that all this poetry does not ripen except by a “favour” from the one who is praised ﷺ. For him the Prophet is the dawn that erases the darkness of ignorance and frees the human being from the “prison of nature” so that he becomes a true “vicegerent” on earth.
