Autumn of Life and Decline of Physical Strength

Worldly glory and dazzling eloquence are fleeting phenomena that cannot withstand the autumn of life

This Ghazal represents “the final reckoning”; As Sheikh Saadi contemplates the autumn of life and the decline of physical strength, he transforms the burning embers of his creative being into a fragrance of wisdom to benefit the world, while remaining apprehensive of what he will carry with him to meet his Lord.

English Translation

When that time comes when the body weakens and the vigor of youth departs, the eloquence and logic of the eloquent speaker, with his sweet words, will fade.

The winds of autumn will come unexpectedly, taking away the splendor and freshness that you see radiating today from this fragrant shrub.

My feet will tire of walking and lose their ability to move, blessed is he who understands the truth and took precautions and departed from this world with a pure life and a good reputation.

Just as a dried-up stream can never return to its former course, so too is life gone forever. God knows that even if I were to exhaust my eyes in tears, the flow of time will not change, and destiny will come and fate will fulfil its promise.

How could someone like me (Saadi), with such meager deeds and paltry provisions, aspire to the highest Paradise? And who would allow Satan (the Satan of the self) to tread upon the pure land of the Kingdom/Paradise?

My greatest endeavor was to be like the finest oud wood; I consumed my being in the fires of thought and contemplation, so that the fragrance of wisdom (good reputation and sincere, beneficial wisdom) might rise and its scent reach the farthest corners of the earth.

Sweet eloquence was all that Saadi possessed on his journey, and this legacy is what will remain of him in this world. But alas, I do not know what he will truly take with him to meet his Lord, in the Judgment Day.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

Autumn of Life (bad-e Khazan): A common metaphor in Persian literature for old age and death, where Sheikh Saadi connects the beauty of nature (golban) with the brevity of human life to warn against being deceived by youth.

Water and Stream (juy-o-ab): Flowing water symbolizes the fleeting moments of life that pass and never return, and weeping here (agar garye konam) represents belated regret that cannot alter the inevitability of fate.

Ahriman and Minoo (ahriman-o-minoo): Sheikh Saadi used Terms with Zoroastrian roots (Ahriman for the devil, and Mino for paradise) are used to humbly express his own inherent deficiency. He sees himself, due to his sins, as Ahriman (the devil), unworthy of entering the highest paradise (Mino).

The burning of the oud (Sukhtan Oud): A powerful Sufi image of self-sacrifice. The poet (the mystic) annihilates himself in the “Atash Andisheh” (fire of thought) to produce “Bu/Atr” (wisdom).

Capital and eternal wealth: Sheikh Saadi distinguishes between what remains for people (poetry and remembrance). Al-Hasan) and what truly benefits the servant on the Day of Reckoning before God, and he emphasizes the station of “fear and hope,” for despite the benefit his words bring to people in this world, he remains anxious about the emptiness of his heart from the saving sincerity.

This sermon means:

Worldly glory and dazzling eloquence are fleeting phenomena that cannot withstand the autumn of life, and that a person’s worth lies in the sincerity of his heart and what he stores up for the day of his departure. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to the station of “humility at the end” and elevates the value of self-sacrifice for the sake of God. Benefiting others, affirming that the world may retain a person’s trace (their fragrance), but true salvation depends on what the heart carries with it on its journey towards the highest realm.
