Saadi’s Journey in India: Thanking God for his blessings

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4

For God, in His mercy, has placed the balm of kindness upon my wounds, not because of any merit on my part due to the magnitude of my affliction or the righteousness of my deeds, but rather in accordance with the boundless generosity of His grace and the unending flow of His favor upon me.

How can I possibly bear the burden of thanking Him for this abundant blessing, even if I were to make my head a foot with which to walk the paths of His service and obedience (a metaphor for exerting the utmost effort in humility, service, and worship)?

For I have attained salvation and liberation after those chains and trials I endured in India at the Somnath temple, and the echoes of those lessons and experiences still resonate in my heart to this very hour.

The first of those lessons is that whenever I raise my hands in supplication and the lack of connection to the threshold of the Almighty Truth—the Knower of the unseen and the secrets…

…The image of that idol (the Chinese doll) tied with ropes appeared before my insight; That memory casts the dust of humiliation from the eyes of the arrogant ego, and suppresses within me every self-perception.

Then I realize with certainty that the hand I raised in supplication to God was not raised by my own strength or power, but by a divine force that permitted it to move.

For it is not the masters of hearts who raise their hands by their own volition, but rather it is the threads of divine support that are drawn from the unseen realm to stir their longings.

Truly, the doors of goodness and worship are open to all, but not everyone possesses the ability to seize the opportunity to perform righteous deeds unless divine favor is bestowed upon them.

And this is the greatest obstacle; For no one can take a step in the realm of holiness (God) or enter the court of the true Sovereign (God) unless granted permission/a royal decree to enter.

The key to destiny and fate is not possessed by any human being. The sole Almighty and Controller of existence is God alone, and that is sufficient.

So, O diligent seeker on the path of righteousness, do not boast of your obedience to anyone, for all favor and grace belong to God alone, who guided you and made your steps firm.

Since the Creator fashioned your essence in the unseen realm pure and perfected your nature, it is only natural that no ugly or reprehensible actions should emanate from your disposition.

And indeed, the Creator (God) who extracted the sweet honey from the bee’s belly is the same One who placed deadly poison in the snake’s fang. Each is facilitated by God for what it was created to do.

If God—for a reason—wills the end of your kingdom and the ruin of your home, He first makes you, because of your arrogance, oppress people and scatter their unity, so that this becomes the cause of your destruction.

But if the clouds of His mercy and forgiveness descend upon you, He, the Exalted, makes you a source of tranquility for His servants and comfort for the needy.

So beware of arrogance, if you are among the righteous. And always remember that you did not rise by your own strength, but because the hand of divine providence took you by the hand and raised you from your fall.

These words are beneficial to those who listen attentively and bear witness, and you will attain the station of true (perfect) men if you follow the path of truth in your journey (the Sufi path).

You will achieve a lofty rank if the doors are opened for you, where the carpet of honor is spread before you at the table of divine glory.

However, this is conditional upon you not keeping these blessings and honors to yourself alone, but rather you must remain mindful of the plight of the poor, the brokenhearted, and the afflicted and weak.

Perhaps you will pray for mercy for me after my death. So I (Saadi)—despite all that I have written—I don’t trust in the righteousness of my work, and I rely only on the grace of my Lord.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

The Symbolism of the Thread (La’bat Jini): Saadi’s discovery of the rope that moves the idol was the greatest monotheistic lesson of his life. He realized that man is an “idol” (a body) moved by the rope of divine “destiny.” Therefore, seeing the “thread” suppresses pride, because one who is moved by a thread other than his own has no right to boast or admire himself.

The Attraction from the Unseen (Dar Mikshand): This refers to the station of the “attracted.” The sincere seeker raises his hands only because destiny has drawn his soul to ask. “I do not pray to be answered, but I pray to commune,” and the ability to commune is the very essence of the answer.

God alone (Tawana-ye Mutlaq): This is the phrase Saadi saw inscribed in gold in a previous story, and here he reaffirms it as the essence of all his experiences; there is no agent in existence except God.

The Unity of the Creator (Zanbur-o-Mar): Saadi relies on the logic of “divine justice.” Good and evil (from our limited perspective) are manifestations of a single wisdom. Bees and snakes are tools in the hands of the Creator, and so too are the obedience and disobedience of the servant.

The Jurisprudence of Divine Guidance (Dastat Graftand): Saadi warns against the “idol of obedience,” and that being righteous is a “spiritual well-being” bestowed upon you by God, not a feat of your own. Whoever is upright does so by God’s help, and whoever goes astray does so by God’s justice.

A Bad End and Modesty (Wathiq Nim): Saadi concludes the chapter with the highest mystical station, which is “modesty before God.” Despite all these admonitions, he sees himself as deficient and asks for “mercy,” not “justice.” This is the key to salvation for the Sufis.

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that Human righteousness and good deeds are purely divine favor and grace, in which the servant has no part except through permission and unseen guidance. This is important in spiritual and emotional development because it shatters the idol of self-admiration and establishes the reality of absolute dependence on the Creator. It affirms that true well-being lies in a heart free from self-centeredness, and that whoever witnesses God’s hand guiding every step on the path of truth finds relief from the arrogance of pretense and is immersed in oceans of praise and gratitude.
