Divine manifestations: creation of Reason, Logic, and Contemplation

It began with God Almighty planting the inclination of will (the inclination to act) in the very core of the heart. Only then was this servant able to bow his head and place it at the threshold of his prayer niche, prostrating.

For were it not for the flow of divine grace coursing through the veins of existence, this weak servant would not have been able to bring any benefit or good to any of creation.

So do not limit your thinking (your perspective) to this tongue that uttered words of affirmation and testimony: “And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants and made them bear witness against themselves, [saying], ‘Am I not…?’” By your Lord, they said, “Yes, we bear witness.” But rather, let your insight penetrate to witness who (*God) bestowed upon this tongue the virtue of speech and expression.

For the eyes of human are the two gateways to the greatest knowledge, and they have been opened to observe the signs of divine creation in the realm of the heavens and in the hidden treasures of the earth.

So how could you perceive the landmarks of elevation and the pitfalls of degradation in the course of your life, were it not for the Creator, Exalted is He, having ordained (opened) for you this door to visual and intellectual perception?

The Almighty Creator brought the head and the hand into existence from nothingness, then instilled in the hand the trait of generosity and giving, and planted in the head the innate nature of submission and prostration to Him (God Almighty).

Were it not for this divine design (of the hand and the head) in His wisdom, when would the hand be able to give? Indeed, it is impossible for the head to incline towards prostration were it not for His grace.

And with His profound wisdom, He fashioned the eloquence of the tongue (speech) and perfected the creation and structure of the ear (hearing), so that together they become the keys to the locked treasure chest of the heart. The ear receives meanings, and the tongue utters secrets.

If God had not lifted the veil of silence from the tongue (preventing speech, as in the case of a mute person), and revealed the hidden secrets of the heart, could anyone uncover the hidden secrets of the heart or know anything about them?

Were it not for the tireless efforts of the ear, which acts like a spy, eavesdropping on conversations, the news of the world would never reach the sovereign of the mind (the controlling center in the human body), that enthroned in the head.

So exalted is He, the Most High, who bestowed upon me—Saadi—these sweet and melodious words, and He is the same One who granted you—O reader—the ability to hear and the pleasure of understanding to comprehend these subtle meanings.

For hearing and speech are like the gatekeepers (guards of the king’s gate in the palace) standing at the gates of kings, conveying messages from the sovereign of divine grace to the sovereign of the human spirit.

So if pride creeps into your heart, and you think that doing good originates from me independently, and it’s the pure understanding of my mind alone? Then turn towards that door (the Divine Grace) from which success descends, so that you may realize that we are but a conduit for His will (His guidance).

For your example is like that of the gardener (the caretaker of the garden), who carries the first blossoms and fragrant flowers to present them to the king’s palace, unaware that those flowers originally grew in the king’s garden and under his care (He appointed you as a gardener by His command and bestowed upon you generous gifts to work in His palace and garden).

Contextual and Gnostic Marginalia

Divine Priority (Nakhst or Iradat…): Saadi establishes the Sufi doctrine that the servant’s will is subordinate to the Creator’s will, and outward prostration is an echo of an inner will that God has instilled in the heart.

Divine Guidance: In Gnosticism, divine guidance is the “rope” that connects the servant to the Lord. Work without divine guidance is “material toil,” while work with divine guidance is “spiritual journey.”

Key to the Heart (Keled Del): A powerful metaphor; The tongue is not merely an instrument of idle talk, but rather the “interpreter of the unseen,” and the ear is the “channel” through which God nourishes the soul from without.

The Spy of the Ear (Spy of the Ear): Describing hearing as a “spy” is a classic Persian metaphor meaning that the senses steal news from the material world to deliver it to the sovereign of the intelligent mind (Hosh).

From the Sultan to the Sultan: This phrase represents the pinnacle of “the unity of witnessing”; the speaker (God through His grace) and the listener (God through His opening of hearts) are one, and humanity is merely a bridge over which this sacred discourse passes.

The Gardener’s Representation (Bustan-ban): This is one of Saadi’s most beautiful representations in the “world of education.” The servant who boasts of his prayers or generosity is like a gardener who brings roses from the king’s garden and then boasts of presenting them to the king! The lesson is: Humility before God, the Giver, in obedience.

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that every action on the path of goodness—whether it be a prostration of the head, a generous act, or a wise word spoken—is purely a divine favor and blessing that precedes the servant’s action. It is important in spiritual development because it suppresses the vice of “self-admiration” and purifies the soul from the claim of entitlement, affirming that the true seeker is the one who sees himself as a gardener in God’s kingdom, returning His gifts to the Benefactor with the humility of submission and acknowledgment of his own neediness.
