Gratuities, Prayers, and Praise to the Almighty Creator

The Almighty Creator has placed the secret of healing in honey, but this healing power cannot overcome death when its appointed time arrives.

While honey may improve the moods of the living and restore balance to the body, the throes of death and the departure from this world are an ailment for which medicine has no antidote or cure.

For one who has only the last breath of life remaining, whose soul is ready to leave his body and depart this world, what good can placing honey in his mouth do?

It’s like someone who’s been struck with a steel mace, shattering his skull, and then some ignorant person advises rubbing the painful area with sandalwood powder to soothe the pain!

So flee from the causes of danger as much as you can, but beware of trying to overcome God’s inevitable decree with your meager strength, or of struggling against fate with your own fingernails.

For as long as the internal organs (the stomach and, by extension, the organs of the body, each according to its function) are able to assimilate/utilize food and drink, the body remains healthy, well-proportioned, and in good condition.

However, this house (the body) will fall into complete ruin and collapse when there is a conflict between the body’s nature and the nourishment it receives.

For there are four universal natures: moisture and dryness, heat and cold; From the mixture of these opposing forces, God fashioned the human being.

Whenever one of these humors/temperaments becomes dominant and prevails over the others, the natural (divine) balance of equilibrium in the body is disrupted, and illness takes hold.

Were it not for the cool breeze of breath (inhalation) that soothes the inner self, the heat of the stomach would burn the very core of the soul, causing it to tremble violently.

And were the stomach’s cauldron (its movement, like a cooking pot), to cease dissolving food, this delicate body would wither, and the affairs of its life would become corrupted.

Therefore, those with insight, don’t attach their hearts to these material pillars; Because they know for certain that these opposites will not remain harmonious forever (when the body reaches its end with death).

So do not imagine that the strength of your body is derived solely from food (eating and benefiting from it), but know that it is the grace of the Almighty, the Most High, that sustains you and provides you with the means of growth.

I swear by God’s might that even if you were to place your eyes under the blades of swords and sharp razors as a sacrifice for divine blessings, you would not fulfill even a fraction of the obligation to thank Him.

And when you prostrate in obedience to God and place your forehead on the ground, let all your focus be on praising the Creator, and disregard any self-importance or claims of righteousness.

And indeed Praise, remembrance, and presence of heart are but rituals of supplication at the door of the All-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy (Allah, the Exalted and Majestic). It is unbecoming for the supplicant to be overcome by arrogance or pride when seeking bounty and forgiveness.

Suppose you have bestowed upon the Creator, the Most High, a favor through obedience of yours, have you not, throughout your life, been sustained by His provision and lived in contentment on His earth?

Contextual and Mystical Marginalia

The Creator and Honey: Saadi alludes to the Quranic verse (In it is healing for mankind), but he sets “limits to causes”; the cause (honey) works by the permission of the Creator, so if fate brings death, all causes cease to exist.

The Ladle and the Sandalwood: A satirical metaphor to illustrate human helplessness. Sandalwood is used to soothe a simple headache, but it is useless against a fractured skull. Similarly, human science treats the “symptoms” but stands helpless before the “root,” which is death.

The Four Humors (Characteristics): Saadi draws on ancient Greco-Islamic medicine (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile). In mysticism, he likens the body to a “city” inhabited by four antagonistic enemies, and peace between them is maintained only by “the hand of the Creator.” If divine providence is withdrawn, the city will decay from within.

The Stomach Cauldron (Dig Ma’dah): Sa’adi portrays vital processes as a delicate art; cold for cooling, heat for cooking, and the balance between them is “well-being.”

Seeing the Truth and the Absence of the Self (Khud Ra Mubin): A lesson in sincerity. The prostration in which the worshiper witnesses his own prostration is a prostration to the ego. True prostration is when the servant is absent from himself and witnesses God’s action within him.

The station of begging (Geda’i): Sufis believe that no matter how pious a servant becomes, he remains a “Geda” (beggar) at God’s door, and boasting about worship is a form of hidden idolatry.

Fiefdom (Iqta’): A historical term referring to a sultan granting land to a military commander. Sa’adi says: Your obedience to God is merely fulfilling a small part of the “contract of sustenance” He has given you in this world. How then can you boast of your service to this sultan (God)?

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that physical well-being is a delicate and fragile balance dependent on the care of the Creator, not on the power of material causes, and that true worship is absolute surrender with the suppression of the self’s desires. It is important in faith-based and emotional education because it liberates the seeker from the “arrogance of obedience” and shows that man lives as a guest at the table of the Benefactor (God), confirming that whoever witnesses his weakness in the “structure of his body” will attain the position of “humility in his soul.”
