Conclusion of the book (Bustan), by Saadi

I heard that a man, overcome by wine, staggered into the prayer niche of a mosque. There, he threw himself at the threshold of divine grace, weeping and pleading: “O Lord, take me by the hand to the highest Paradise!”

The muezzin seized him by the collar, shouting sternly: “Stop! How a dog enter a mosque? You who have cast aside reason and religion, what good deed have you done to dare hope for Paradise?;It is unbecoming for one with an ugly face (of sin) to strut about with arrogance before the Lord.”

The drunken sheikh burst into tears upon hearing this rebuke from the muezzin, and said: “O master, keep your hand off me; I am truly drunk, but are you surprised by the Creator’s kindness, that a sinner like me finds a way to hope for and draw near to Him (God)?;I am not pleading with you to accept my apology, but rather I am seeking the door of His repentance, for it is open, and His support for the helpless like myself is abundant.

For I am overcome with shame before the vastness of the Generous One’s kindness, to the point that I am ashamed to describe my sins as great in comparison to the greatness of His forgiveness (however great my sins may be, I am ashamed to describe them as great in comparison to the greatness of the Creator). And indeed, if a person is ground down by pride and weakened by the passage of time, he will not rise from his fall unless the hand of divine providence intervenes. And I, that frail old man, groan under the weight of my weakness, O Lord, by the right of Your grace, take me by the hand.

For I do not, O my Lord, ask You for a high rank or great prestige, but I ask You to overlook my shortcomings and sins. For if a friend of mine were to see the slightest of my mistakes, he would expose my ignorance to all of creation. But You, O my God, are the All-Seeing of us, and we are the ones who fear one another. Because You are the Concealer of faults, and we are the tearers of veils.

People clamor with blame in public, while You (O God) watch over Your servant in his solitude and draw the veils of Your protection over him. And if the servants are ignorant and rebellious, the Great Ones strike with the pen of forgiveness over those transgressions.

If You, my Lord, were to forgive sins according to the measure of Your overflowing generosity, all sins would vanish from the world of existence. But if You wish to judge us in proportion to the crime, then cast us into Hell all and give us no weight or measure, for we have no argument to present before You.

If You take me by the hand, I will reach the stations of salvation, but if You cast me far from Your door, who will console me? Who will dare to dispute with me if You, my God, grant me victory? And who has the power to restrain me if You grant me deliverance?

For on the Day of Resurrection, all of creation will be divided into two groups, and I do not know which path will be taken to me on that day. I am truly astonished that my path leads to the people of Paradise, for all that I have done throughout my life in this world has been crooked and deviant (I have strayed from the path of righteousness and the path of God Almighty).

My heart whispers to me from time to time with a hidden hope: that God Almighty would be ashamed to punish an elderly man; but I wonder how the Creator could be ashamed of me, when I have never been ashamed of myself?

Is not the story of Joseph, the righteous, a lesson for us? After all the suffering and hardship he endured in the depths of the well and prison, when he gained power and prominence in Egypt, did he punish Jacob’s family (his brothers) for their crime (throwing him into the well and selling him for a paltry price)? Rather, he forgave them, for inner beauty demands true kindness. He did not hold them accountable for their vile deeds, nor did he reject their worthless offering.

It is with such kindness (the kindness of the Prophet Joseph towards Jacob’s family, his brothers) that our eyes turn to You, O Lord. So forgive this bankrupt, worthless one, O God, for no one has ever seen a record darker than mine. I have not done a single deed worthy of Your favor, yet my entire reliance is bound to Your forgiveness. I have brought nothing to Your presence but hope, so, O Lord, do not let me despair of Your pardon.

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The Symbolism of the Drunken One (Mast): The drunkard here represents the seeker on the Sufi path, in whom the “veil of false modesty” and the “form of creation” have been broken. His entry into the mosque in this state is a representation of the station of “complete necessity.” When one loses all means and has nothing left but the house of the One who causes all causes

The muezzin and the apparent mind: The muezzin represents the “rigid, legalistic mind” that judges by appearances and forms, seeing a drunkard as a dog. As for the drunkard, he sees within himself a mercy that the muezzin’s mind cannot comprehend.

A meager offering: An allusion to the story of Joseph in the Quran. Sufis believe that all human acts of obedience are “a meager offering” unworthy of the presence of the Truth. However, the Generous One accepts even the smallest offering, however insignificant, with His immense generosity.

Concealing faults: The attribute of “the Concealer” is the last refuge for the seeker on the Sufi path. The difference between God and creation is that God sees the sin and conceals it, while creation imagines the sin and exposes it.

The white hair (Moy-e-Sepid): A reference to the sacred hadith: “I am too shy to punish My male and female servants who grow old in Islam with fire.” Saadi employs the “beauty of divine shyness” in the face of the audacity of human shortcomings.

This story from Saadi Shirazi at the end of his book Bustan means that the salvation of the servant is contingent upon With the sincerity of his humility and his detachment from reliance on his own deeds, replacing them with pure hope in the vastness of divine mercy, this is important in spiritual and emotional development because it establishes the conclusion of his “virtuous city” on the foundation of “unity and neediness,” affirming that the true treasure of the seeker is not numerous acts of obedience, but rather “hope” in the One whose forgiveness precedes His justice and whose covering encompasses His ignorance, and that every path other than His threshold is a wandering and misguidance.
