The difference between an idol worshiper and a worshiper of the Almighty Creator

In this story, Saadi raises one of the boldest and most profound mystical questions; This is “The Difference Between Idol and the Eternal,” a story that transcends religious labels to reach the very essence of boundless divine mercy. It demonstrates that God—in His majesty—is too exalted to be equated with inanimate objects in turning away those who seek His help, even if they have strayed from the path for ages.

It is said that a Magian worshiper withdrew from the world’s clamor and isolated himself from humanity, devoting himself entirely to the worship of an idol he had taken as his god.

Many years passed while he clung to this reprehensible belief, until fate struck him with a severe problem and an intractable crisis that overwhelmed him.

Then, the wretched man fell prostrate at the feet of his idol, begging for help. A breath of goodness, and he rolled in the dust of his temple (the idol’s temple) in humility and brokenness.

And he began to cry out in anguish: “O my idol/O my god, all means have failed me, so take my hand, for my soul has reached its limit (my soul has reached its end and cannot bear it anymore), have mercy on my weakness and the decay of my body.”

He repeated his supplication and lamentation before his inanimate idol many times, but nothing came of it, and his need remained unanswered.

(Saadi comments on this scene)

How can a deaf idol fulfill the needs of humankind, when it lacks the power to even ward off a fly, if it lands on his face?

(Saadi returns to the story to continue what he started)

The sheikh flew into a rage and shouted at the idol: Woe to you! You who have shackled me with the chains of misguidance for so many years! I have wasted the prime of my life worshiping you in vain!

Either you grant me this urgent need now, or I will raise my hands and plea to the True Creator, the Lord!

The worshiper’s face remained covered with the dust of the idol’s threshold (his idol) until the Holy God (Allah Almighty) answered him and granted his request before he could even blink.

One of the wise men was astonished by this strange/perplexing scene, and his inner peace was troubled by the intensity of his bewilderment, wondering about the secret of this success (of the worshiper).

For how could a misguided servant (like this idol worshiper), who did not know the path of monotheism to God alone, the Creator in the highest realms, and who remained entangled in the fumes of idolatry (as if he were utterly intoxicated by it, unable to easily relinquish it, as if he were addicted to it)

and who had not truly cleansed his heart (by invoking the name of God, the One, the Subduer, upon entering Islam) from the filth of disbelief, nor his hands from the stain of treachery, expect God to respond to him so swiftly and grant his desire?

While this sage was immersed in the sea of this perplexing question and its unfathomable implications, a divine call (a heavenly inspiration) reached his heart, unraveling the mysteries of the matter for him.

Listen, O you: This old man, an idol worshiper, lacking in intellect, pleaded at length before his idol, only to be turned away empty-handed, his idol hearing nothing of his supplication.

So if he were to knock upon Our door, the door of the Creator, in his desperation and humility, and We (God Almighty) were to turn him away empty-handed, what then, at that moment, is the difference between the powerless idol and the Self-Sufficient, the All-Powerful (God Almighty)?

(Saadi advice)

So, my friend, bind your heart to the Eternal (God Almighty) alone; Everything else—whoever it may be—is more powerless than that idol before the will of God.

For it is truly impossible, I say with certainty, that when you prostrate yourself before this divine threshold, your hand returning empty-handed, utterly unfulfilled.

O God, we have come to Your protection, though we fall short in our duty to obey You. We have come to You poor, possessing nothing of this world’s fleeting pleasures, save for our immense hope in Your boundless generosity.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

Idol and Eternal: A profound verbal and metaphorical play by Saadi. “Idol” symbolizes inanimity and powerlessness, while “Eternal” is the name of God to whom one turns in times of need. (The intended meaning is self-evident), and the mystics believe that the perfection of “self-sufficiency” necessitates the perfection of “succor”; for God even helps the sinner to demonstrate that His Lordship is unlike the impotence of idols.

The state of dire need: The secret to God’s response to the Magian lies not in his faith, but in his state of “dire need” (Who answers the distressed when they call upon Him?). When the sheikh despaired of idolatry and turned to the Truth, the veil of selfishness within him was shattered. God does not turn away a heart that has been broken for Him, even if its owner is drowning in the wine of his own desires.

The Critique of the Gnostic (Haqayeq-e Shenas): The gnostic’s wonder represents the “mind bound” by human standards and measures (reward and punishment). The message here is that God’s grace is vast and transcends the logic of calculations.

The Magi (Magian): In Sufi literature, the “Magi” is sometimes used as a symbol for the stranger on the path, to show that the sun of Truth shines upon all if the intention is sincere.

The Tail of Pollution (Tardamani): This indicates that the stain of sin does not obscure the Lord’s generosity if the servant is humbled. The Lord accepts the repentant (the sincere) with justice and the distressed (the Magian) with grace.

This story from Saadi Shirazi’s book Bustan means that God’s mercy and generosity transcend the sins of His servants and the constraints of religious beliefs. It also means that sincere supplication in times of distress opens the gates of heaven to even the most distant of creatures. This story is important for spiritual and emotional development because it reinforces certainty in God’s divine power, which mends the brokenness of those whom idols and worldly desires have rejected. It affirms that the door of truth never closes, and that the perfection of divinity lies in aiding those who have no helper but God.
